Aiming to convert to electric vehicles? Look no further.

As of April 2021, your electric vehicle options are still fairly limited compared to the traditional internal combustion engine—but that doesn’t mean the options on the market aren’t loaded with technology, luxury, and functionality. Automakers have done their best to craft EVs that are designed with the consumer in mind, and that means it’s up to us to do a little research to see what we love best. Thankfully, we’ve compiled a list of all the electric vehicles on the market today, along with their most basic specifications, to give you a little idea of where to start.

Welcome to Alternative Power Week! In honor of Earth Day, we’re going to spend the next several days diving into the nitty-gritty of the new, eco-friendly technology powering the vehicles of the future to keep you informed on all the latest changes in the automotive industry. If you have any questions or ideas for a future article, leave your ideas in the comments!

How to Evaluate Electric Vehicles

Evaluating an electric vehicle is both similar to and different from the car buying process you may be used to already. Yes, you’re still going to be car shopping based on your preferred style of vehicle, your price range, and its functionality—but there are some other factors that get thrown in that you have to consider.

How far do you drive in a day?

The first step to deciding if an electric vehicle is right for you is to understand how far you drive in a day. Do you have a long commute to work, or do you rack up the miles as a serial errand-runner? Do you and your family regularly take long road trips—and if so, are you the kind of people who want to get the driving done as quickly as possible, or are you more about the leisurely pace?

These are all crucial question that will give you a better idea of what you need out of your EV. A 200-mile range might not seem like a lot, but if you go months without ever traveling that far in the span of a few days, you may not need a vehicle with a larger capacity. Or you might simply opt for a plug-in hybrid, just in case.

Where are chargers located?

Do you live in an urban area with plenty of charging facilities, or are you rural? Can you guarantee you can plug in your EV while you’re at work, or are you going to have to rely on installing a charging system at home? If there are local charging facilities, how close are they located to the places you frequent? And if you do have access to chargers, how much is it going to cost to plug in there versus at home?

What about the battery?

This is one of the most pressing concerns buyers have when it comes to electric vehicles. Most batteries come from the manufacturer with a 100,000-mile or eight-year warranty, depending on which comes first. But, as with any of your favorite gadgets that use lithium ion batteries—like your laptops and cell phones—batteries will degrade over time and with use.

You’ll also have to familiarize yourself with kilowatt-hours, or kWh, which is to EVs what gallons are to an ICE fuel tank. In basic terms, the higher the kWh, the most power the vehicle has. But because that power is variable depending on other factors (size or weight of the vehicle, drive mode, state of charge, temperature, etc.), it isn’t a hugely reliable indicator of available energy or even size. You can read more about that in our post explaining kilowatt hours.
