We spent week with the Mazda CX-5 compact suv. This smallish SUV is great for all we love in an SUV—flexible cargo and seating space, capability in the snow, hilly terrain or quasi-off road conditions, but also great for daily drives and long trips. And, it’s true to it’s roots of being fun to drive with lots of power in a small, agile and beautiful car.

The CX-5 comes in several trim levels with pre-packaged option groups that make it easy to figure out which one is the best fit for you. The Signature edition we test drove is the top of the line filled with quite a few luxury features (keep reading for other option levels). For its $36,000 price tag we were quite impressed at all this car delivers. Here are all the facts you need to know about the Mazda CX-5.

What This Car Costs

Mazda packages its models nicely, so you can get a nice selection of features without a lot add-ons. The downside is that there are certain features that can’t be added on, so if you want them you have to go with the trim level that features them. Here’s how it breaks dow:

  • Sport edition base model with 187 horsepower and 186 torque, infotainment system with dial controller, push button starter, two USB ports, Bluetooth connected phone system, blind spot monitors, standard cruise control, $24,350
  • Touring edition, with 187 horsepower and 186 torque, leatherette seats, Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, rear USB ports, rear cross traffic alert, smart braking with pedestrian detection, $26,615
  • Grand Touring, which adds adaptive cruise control, lane departure warning with lane keep assist, power driver’s seat, 3 years of Sirius XM traffic and travel info, $30,045
  • Grand Touring Reserve, adds all wheel drive, 227 horsepower, 310 torque engine, heated and vented front seats, heated rear seats, keyless entry and starter, head up display with road sign assist, $31,445
  • Signature, which adds premium wheels, frameless rear view mirror, Nappa leather trimmed seats, parking sensors, traffic sign recognition, heated steering wheel, Bose premium sound, premium wood, chrome and leather interior trim, navigation, $36,890
  • Add all wheel drive to the Sport, Touring or Grand Touring models, $1400

What You Need to Know

  • The rear seat is comfortable for one or two people but does not offer a lot of leg room
  • A lot of the luxuries, including navigation that displays in the HUD, are only available on this trim
  • If you use premium fuel you can increase the horsepower by 23
  • Regular fuel is just fine!
  • Fuel economy is estimated at 22 city/27 highway for 24 combined MPG (about what we got)
  • 36 month/36,000 mile bumper to bumper warranty
