The Sleepover: Family Fun and Cool Cars
It’s not everyday you find a good family movie to stream.
When planning a family movie night , finding the right film to watch can be so time consuming. The Sleepover, directed by Trish Sie (Pitch Perfect 3) on Netflix is a great film to watch with the whole family. There’s a lot of action, adventure, family fun and cool cars and you won’t feel bad about watching this with your kids.
The Sleepover is a family-friendly film set in Boston. If you’ve visited, you’ll recognize places like the library, the Boston Tea Party Museum, the Boston Children’s Museum and more.

Dad Jokes for Days
Ron (Ken Marino) prides himself in being a successful pastry chef. He “works out” his fingers to gain strength for his craft. And he’s a happy kind of dad who enjoys driving his kids to and from school in a minivan – and carpooling their sassy friend, Mim. If you like dad jokes, you’ll like Ron because he tells lots of these cheesy jokes throughout the movie.

Mom’s Secret Past Life
Margot (Malin Åkerman), the mom, is definitely not your average stay at home mom just raising a family with her dorky pastry chef husband. She tries to act the part but her identity is revealed via a viral video of her son dancing in the school bathroom. Her daughter, Clancy (Sadie Stanley) and son Kevin (Maxwell Simkins) discover that their mom is actually a former world-class thief in the witness protection program. When both their mom and dad are kidnapped and forced to pull one last job with an ex-flame of Margot’s (Joe Manganiello), the kids team up to rescue their parents.
Mom leaves behind clues for the kids and they discover a secret storage unit with major spy gear and one sweet ride that looks like a debadged Maserati. A GranTurismo, maybe?
Clancy, who once complained about having a boring life, changes her mind after one crazy night jam packed with adventure and action. She changes her mind about her mom, too – when she discovers she’s actually a lot like her.

Dorky Dad’s Minivan versus Hot Ex-fiance’s Sportscar
Margot and Ron are a very odd couple. Ron enjoys baking and driving a minivan so it’s no surprise that when he meets his wife’s old flame, he becomes intimidated (and annoyed). Can he really compete with him?
There are car chases, but if you’re hoping for The Fast & the Furious-type, you won’t find it in The Sleepover. But I think most parents will appreciate the humor in carpool driver Dad being awed by a newer Dodge minivan (after his wife hot wires it) when he steps on the gas.

Positive Heartfelt Messages
The Sleepover wasn’t only humourous, it had some positive messages, too. Clancy, who’s a talented teen but struggles because she is very shy, has quite a few moments. One with her dad over cupcakes, one with her best friend and later with her little brother. If you have a teenage daughter, you know how it is. Even Mom has a moment where she declares her love for Ron and lets him know they are the real deal (not her and the hot ex). There are some very cute, heartfelt moments.
Is it worth watching? While there are some negative reviews out there, I would say yes. Sure, there could have been a little more detail to Margot’s story but my daughter and I really enjoyed it. As always, it really depends on the viewer.
