Which Volkswagen SUV is Right for You? Here’s How the VW Atlas, Atlas Cross Sport, Tiguan and Taos Line Up

Volkswagen has been on a tear. Since the introduction of the VW Atlas in 2017, which lit the company’s sales on fire, VW SUVs have been the company’s signature, a full lineup, from compct to full size all following in Atlas’s footsteps: the sportier Atlas Cross Sport, the mid-size Tiguan and the smallest, the Taos compact SUV.
All 4 offer great options for SUV buyers, including premium standard features like all wheel drive, wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, large digital multimedia screens and leather or leatherette seating, even at a value price. But, it’s a shopping conundrum: Which is right for you? We took a look at each to sort out the differences.
This story is 100% human researched and written based on actual first-person knowledge, extensive experience and expertise on the subject of cars and trucks.
VW SUVs Started with Atlas and Got Better from There

For so long, VW was known for sporty hatchbacks and sleek value-packed sedans. But without a fully capable lineup of SUVs, VW was a non-contender for many US buyers. But in 2017 VW introduced the Atlas and made a splash; it won praise and set sales records. That’s because it was customized for the North American market. Now VW SUVs make up 85% of the company’s sales in the US.
Since then, the Volkswagen Tiguan was redesigned as a mini-me of the Atlas and is a best seller around the world. Shortly after, the Volkswagen introduced the Taos, a mini-mini-me version of the Atlas and the Atlas CrossSport, a sportier, more muscular two-row version of the Atlas.

VW Atlas: The Big Daddy of VW SUVs For Families Who Need Space

As the biggest of VW SUVs, the Atlas makes no compromises in space or capability. VW updated the Atlas’s design in 2024 and rumor has it that we’ll see a redesigned Atlas in 2026. With seating for 7 or 8, it’s a full sized SUV and it feels like it behind the wheel; you can feel the size and height of this in the driver’s seat, but that’s OK; it also gives you the confidence and capability that you expect in an SUV.
One of our favorite details are the slide and tilt center seats that allow 3rd row access even with a child car seat installed. And, with the right seats, 3 will fit across the center bench.
Buyers can go basic or upscale in the R Line. And, center row captains chairs make the 3rd row even easier to reach and more comfortable to sit in.

- The Atlas has a 12″ center screen and 10″ driver display

Atlas Cross Sport Puts Muscle Into Your Drive

This 5 passenger, 4 door two row version of the Atlas, the Cross Sport also expected to be redesigned for 2026, delivers a more sophisticated look and feel with a sloped roof, shorter length and sportier look. Still, it offers the full size drive experience of the Atlas without the added length and size of a 3 row SUV. This one is great for small families, fur-baby families or drivers who simply love the truck-like feel of a full size SUV but want something that is slightly smaller and sportier.
