GM doubled an ignition switch recall, a voluntarily recall of 2003-2007 cars that may experience a disablement of the engine and the air bags when the engine shuts off. The GM recall, which will correct an ignition switch flaw, expands an earlier recall of 2005-2007 Chevrolet Cobalts and Canadian sold Pontiac G5s and Pontiac Pursuits. The expanded recall now includes these models: 2003-2007 Saturn Ions, 2006-2007 Chevrolet HHRs, and 2006-2007 Pontiac Solstice and 2007 Saturn Sky.
General Motors says a problem with the ignition switch may cause the key to accidentally switch to the “accessory” or “off” position, turning off the engine and most of the electrical components on the vehicle.
There have been 13 deaths associated with the accidental engine shutdown. GM advises drivers to use the ignition key with nothing else on the key ring until the ignition switch it fixed.
