Get to Know this Name: Volvo EX90, Volvo’s First Fully Electric 3 Row SUV

The 2024 Volvo Ex90

Is this FINALLY the car you’ve been waiting for?

Oh how we love the Volvo XC90. It’s elegant. It’s elevated. And it carries your kids, the dog, groceries and luggage without the threat of a style snafu. You get to be you in the driver’s seat. It provides conveniences and luxuries at your fingertips, and your kids can nestle down in luxury too (or, sweat and spill on the leather seats, which clean up nicely).

Until you can get to see the 2024 Volvo EX90 in person, see what we love about the classic XC90:

The one thing it didn’t do well, until now, is keep you from spending time and money at the gas station. Hello, EX90.

Meet the Volvo EX90: All Electric Loveliness

So what is this fully electric 3-row SUV all about? We got a sneak peek, and this is what Volvo is promising:

  • Seating for 6 or 7 passengers
  • Will be built in the US starting in 2023— which means that there’s a glimmer of hope that federal incentives will apply!
  • Improved driver assist and safety systems — because safety is Volvo’s jam
  • A large 14.5” center screen with Google’s operating system for navigation, music, climate and more
  • Phone as digital key option
  • 300 miles of electric range on a single charge
  • Recharge up to 80% of the battery in 30 minutes at a level 3 DC fast charger (likely, it’ll take overnight to charge at a level 2 240-V household outlet, similar to a clothes dryer outlet)
  • Reverse charging capability: You can use the car to power your house if you need to
  • Holy cow performance: 476 horsepower and 671 torque means instant acceleration and all the speed you need
  • An interior you’ll feel good about: elegantly crafted interiors will be comprised of significant amounts of recycled steel, aluminum and plastics

Until the EX90 is a reality, you can see what we thought of Volvo’s compact electric crossover, the C40 recharge:

While we love the C40 for its style and fun driving, it’s no match for kids, carpools and cargo!

How Much Will This Car Cost?

Volvo says the opening price will start under $80,000, and customer deliveries will begin in the fall of 2023. Currently, the base model XC90 starts at $56,000 and the plug-in electric hybrid PHEV, which has about 32 miles of all-electric driving range, starts at about $72,000.

So yes, the EX represents a hike over the base price, but it’s not a huge leap from the PHEV. Considering all the trips to the gas station you’ll save and the potential for federal tax credits, it could end up being a true luxury bargain. Then again, anything that saves trips to the gas station is a luxury.

When Can We Have One?

You can pore over all the details here. If you need to get just a little bit closer, set your navigation to drive by Volvo’s Charleston, South Carolina assembly plant. Roll down the windows, and maybe you’ll get a whiff of the brand’s exquisite leathers being tanned or a glimpse of a test vehicle out on the road.
