Toyota Pays the Price: $1.2 Billion Fine
Toyota Pays Largest Fine Ever in Safety Recall
Japanese automaker Toyota received the largest ever fine related to a safety defect that caused to sudden unintended acceleration in its cars.
The defect was first attributed to driver error then to floor mats. The $1.2 billion fine is in addition to the $2 billion that the eventual recall cost Toyota. Following the recall, Toyota made internal changes to its corporate structure and internal safety controls to prevent such an event from occurring in the future.
Correction: The defects were found not to be related to a software malfunction, as earlier reported, and this story was adjusted to reflect this.
