Black Automotive Creators You Need to Know—Especially If You’re Shopping for a Car

It’s Black History Month – time to celebrate Black innovators, leaders and others who have blazed a path for others. But how about those who are making history? In the automotive space it’s not just important to see a variety of opinions because cars, which are a large and complicated purchase, can mean different things to different people. Can we trust our own situations to the bulk of gear-headed reviewers and content creators who mostly happen to be white dudes? Like everything else, we look for someone who looks and lives like us for guidance. Specifically, Black automotive creators.
Which is why we’re in this space. Women buy or influence more than 85% of all car purchases. But the sheer number of Black Americans—50 million—represent a huge share of the market too, enough to make or break a car maker. But if you consider the outsize number of Black athletes—70% of NBA players and more than half of NFL players according to Statista—and Black musicians, which number about 44% according to Billboard, who are are huge cultural influences, including cars, the importance is even greater. But who else can we look to for a culture-inflected opinion, or simply, a Black creator or journalist who is crushing it in a white-dominated world?
These people represent some our favorite voices in the auto space, though we would always love to see more Black creators here—especially women.
This story is 100% human researched and written based on actual first-person knowledge, extensive experience and expertise on the subject of cars and trucks.
Marques Brownlee is Maybe the Best Voice in Tech

Tech expert YouTuber and Instagramer Marques Brownlee is literally a make it or break it voice among all voices with nearly 20 million subscribers on YouTube and more than 4.5 billion views. While he focuses mostly on tech gadgets like phones, headphones, watches and the like, he occasionally focuses on computers on wheels: cars. Of course, they are mostly electric cars, the most computer-like cars on the road. His reviews are always fun, but we love it most when he’s focused on Tesla, for good or bad, and all the contenders gunning for that market.
