Rain rain, go away- wait! I love the rain! So please stay…just let me get ready for you.
Spring has sprung and that means spring showers and blooms will soon arrive. In SoCal, we don’t get a lot of spring rain (or any season) so when we do, we enjoy it. But let’s face it- sometimes rainy days can put a damper on your day but not if you’re prepared. Being prepared for a rainy day can easy peasy when you have the right stuff. With all of the recent rainy days we’ve had, I decided to compile a list of must-have items to keep handy in the car. Here’s how to get your car ready for spring showers.

Must Haves to Keep in the Car for Rainy Day Success
- Windshield wipers – keep them working well and change them as needed so that your visibility is clear in all conditions, especially rain.
- Windshield anti-fog wipes that repel rain – I love wiping my windows with the RainX Anti Fog magical wipe just before heading out to the mountains but it sure does come in handy for the rainy season too. Have you tried these?
- Umbrella.. ella ella ella … hey hey hey hey… Here’s a no brainer. Stash away a small size umbrella in a pocket or trunk of your car. They even make inverted umbrellas specifically for cars! Have you seen them?! They close the opposite way so you can get into your car and close it up.

Think of every worst-case scenario when getting ready for spring showers.
- Poncho – I am not going to lie, I have an old yellow poncho with Snoopy on it just folded up in a ziplock in my trunk. I decided after so many random rainy days to finally put it in the car “just in case.” It sure has come in handy!
- Shower caps- it’s happened to the best of us. You spend the day in the salon getting a fresh cut and blowout only to see that it’s raining on your way home. Keep a few shower caps in the car to save your new do. It may look silly but it helps!
- Small flashlight – sounds odd but it’s a lot darker daytime and night when its overcast and cloudy with rain. Of course, I tend to need the tiniest thing from my purse or need to send my kiddo out to drop off girl scout cookies so we keep a small flashlight for on the go purposes on extra rainy darker nights. A small flashlight will help you see where you’re going in the rain and can prevent you from getting hurt at night.
- Paper Towels – I have a few so that if it’s rainy and water drips into the interior I can soak it up and dry it quickly. Each time the door opens or window goes down. Amongst other things, paper towels are great to have on hand.
- Blanket – Who doesn’t like to be cozy when it’s raining out? My kids personally love asking for a blanket on a rainy day. I keep one in the back of the car usually for soccer nights but a blanket is good for a nap or a picnic, too.

If you live in a colder climate, you may want to add…
- Warm Clothes- It’s a good idea to keep some warm clothes handy. Anything from an extra outfit, socks, spare gloves, a warm hat, and even an extra winter coat. And rain boots, too! You just never know when you’ll need it. The worse result cold rain can bring is catching a cold (or worse). Changing into warm clothes can prevent that.
- Vaseline – As strange as this sounds, it can be a lifesaver. If you live in a cold climate, putting vaseline over the seals of the doors will stop them from freezing. This helps keep your car dry and frozen free. Keep a small towel in the back during the rainy season too. Wipe down as needed.
- Plastic Bags- Keep the mud out by not stepping in it. Ha! Okay, seriously it happens. And especially with kids. Not to mention sand from the beach. Keep plastic bags and a jug of water handy for these situations. Toss shoes into the bag and use the water to clean sand or mud from your feet. This will save you a huge cleaning headache.
