Think Car Shopping Is Boring, or Scary? Rivian Just Reinvented the Showroom and Test Drive
Rivian has opened "spaces" across the nation, so we went to the New York location to work, relax, and shop—without sales pressure

If you’re like me, you’d be more than happy to get some work done in a place with free WiFi, gorgeous greenery, soft music, books, and a spot to grab some coffee. However, if there are cool cars on display, that typically translates to salesmen who would go for the jugular the second they see interest in your eyes.
Not at a Rivian Space. There, the company offers everything I just mentioned, without the pressure to buy a car. You can indulge in the Rivian lifestyle, and even sit in and work in one of their SUVs or pickup trucks if you want to; a salesman won’t try to sell you something you don’t really want. The whole point, the company says, is to provide a quiet and aesthetically pleasing work space and have people around just in case you have questions.
This story is 100% human-researched and written based on actual first-person knowledge, extensive experience, and expertise on the subject of cars and trucks. Also, I was a guest of Rivian, but all impressions and opinions are my own.
You Can Shop—But You Don’t Have To

Recently, I was among the first to experience Rivian’s revamped concept space in New York before it opened to the public. Between dodging raindrops and racing to Pre-K pickup (because #momlife never stops), I discovered a car shopping experience that actually made sense for real people like us.
I’ve been curious about electric SUVs but intimidated by the whole EV world, I jumped at the chance to experience Rivian’s newly reimagined Meatpacking space. What I found was something completely different from your typical car dealership, and honestly, it might just change how we all think about car shopping and showrooms.
“Space,” not Showroom, Sets the Right Tone

In fact, that’s why Rivian calls them “spaces.” They’re not dealerships. On the webpage, Rivian describes these spaces like this: “Think playground, not showroom. You’re welcome to climb in and on our vehicles and get comfortable. No appointment needed.”
The goal isn’t to sell a car, but you can schedule a test drive and ask an employee questions if you’re curious. But if you’re there to enjoy the ambiance, the decor, and the WiFi, that’s perfectly fine, too. If you did want to shop, there are areas you can explore vehicle options like colors, add-ons, accessories, or even merchandise. But again, no pressure.
This is a Space You Can Bring Your Littles To

Most automotive spaces aren’t kid-friendly. In fact, a lot of times, you’re discouraged from bringing them entirely in fear that you’ll damage the cars. Rivian actually encourages it. Rivian has completely rethought the car shopping experience to make it inclusive and, dare I say, enjoyable.
Kids are allowed to climb in and on vehicles (even through the Gear Tunnel). In some locations, you can even bring pets to have with you while you work (or shop—again, your choice!).
The New York space features other child-oriented activities like:
- Interactive displays at kid-height where little ones can choose their favorite Rivian colors
- A sound guessing game featuring NYC noises (my 5-year-old would be obsessed)
- Tactile elements designed for curious little hands

Grown-ups Can Enjoy Activities (And Coffee), Too

I’m a sucker for a cozy cafe to sit down and catch up on things. But my local Starbucks doesn’t have anything to do other than buy expensive coffee and work. At Rivian’s spaces, though, in between projects or on a lunch break, there are several activities for adults to enjoy.
Those adult comfort zones include:
- Cozy lounge areas with actually comfortable seating
- A listening nook where you can hear real owner stories through headsets
- Coffee bar featuring local roaster Don Carvajal (because coffee is life)
- Complimentary Wi-Fi (for those of us who need to multitask)
The “Adventure Is In Us” concept for this round of experiences celebrates a broader view of adventure. It’s not just about off-roading; it’s about starting something new or taking a different path. As someone whose biggest adventure some days is getting both kids out the door on time, this resonated deeply.

Then There’s the Adventure Drive Experience – For Everyone!

Here’s where things got really interesting. Rivian has launched quarterly “adventure drives,” which are small group experiences to local destinations. I joined the inaugural drive to The Met Cloisters, about 30 minutes north of Manhattan. There is a longer drive to the Storm King Art Center.
As a lifelong New Yorker, I’m embarrassed to admit this was my first visit to The Cloisters. The medieval art museum is absolutely gorgeous. I am definitely adding it to my date night list. The contrast between the serene museum grounds and chaotic NYC streets really showcased the R1S’s versatility.
A Test Drive That Takes You Someplace Fun

Of course, part of the experience was driving the R1S. It’s so much roomier than it looks. My legs had actual space in the second row, and there’s enough room that my kids couldn’t kick each other if they tried (game-changer for road trips).
In New York, the cameras and parking systems were a welcome addition. The 360-degree camera system is incredible; maneuvering through NYC traffic and parallel parking in NYC would be so much less stressful. I was also stunned by how well a multi-ton vehicle drove. The Rivian R1S is surprisingly nimble for such a large vehicle.
The return drive through Manhattan traffic was smooth and confidence-inspiring. I also appreciated how humble the interior was. It’s a clean, minimalist design that doesn’t feel overwhelming with buttons and screens.
Visiting a Rivian Space Is a Great Way to Learn About the Brand

What’s great about Rivian’s strategy with its Spaces is that they truly can be for anyone. However, it’s especially wise for anyone who’s EV-curious, and hasn’t had much exposure to how they work, how to work one, how they drive, or how to live with charging.
Being able to climb inside, browse through the settings, and the decor
If you’ve got a family and you’re exploring your EV SUV options, Rivian makes it easy to get up close and personal with the R1S (or the R1T!) and see if it fits within your lifestyle. As a woman, it’s also a wonderful way to browse, since no one will pressure you or ask to speak to your husband.
For those in NYC, it’s also a great way to ask questions and experience how an EV would fit within city life.

If you’re not sure about charging, an interactive display breaks it down, and the decor and low-pressure environment make it feel more like visiting a really cool friend’s place who happens to have an amazing car they’re excited to share.
My pro tip would be: Plan extra time. Between the interactive displays, the vehicle exploration, and the general vibe, you’ll want to linger. And if you can snag a spot on an adventure drive, do it – there’s nothing like experiencing a vehicle in real-world conditions.
And most importantly, enjoy yourself. That’s what Rivian is all about.
