There are fewer and fewer affordable cars on the market these days as the average price of a new car is pushing $50,000. But for buyers shopping for their first car, commuters who want something budget-friendly, or those downsizing from a larger car, there are not a lot of options. Which makes the 2026 Mazda3, Subaru Impreza, and Toyota Corolla all the more exciting.

Sure, these cars might be small, but they’re massive in terms of practicality and style. They’re extremely budget-friendly with solid safety features, lots of conveniences and all are fun to drive. They’re all pretty good at sipping fuel as well.

This story is 100% human researched and written based on actual first-person knowledge, extensive experience and expertise on the subject of cars and trucks.

Just comparing pricing doesn’t give a fair assessment of which is best for your situation. Each offers different features and has its own advantages. Here’s how each is priced:

  • 2026 Mazda3 pricing ranges from $24,550 to $36,000.
  • 2026 Toyota Corolla prices range from $22,925 to $30,135.
  • The 2026 Subaru Impreza costs range from around $26,595 to $30,690.

The 2026 Subaru Impreza has a bit of a higher entry price, but it comes with standard all-wheel drive, an advantage for buyers in cold or hilly climates who wake up to a snowy driveway more than a few times a year. Mazda3 and Toyota Corolla also offer AWD and when added to the package, will come closer to the price of the Subaru Impreza. Though that’s optional equipment, not standard like it is for the Subaru.

Other considerations include the fact that the Toyota Corolla has an available hybrid engine, while the Mazda3 and Impreza are gas-only. This may leave you to wonder what gives the Mazda3 an edge, and the answer is an upscale, luxury interior.

You Get a Lot for the Money with the 2026 Mazda3

The 2026 Mazda3 offers a solid amount of value by providing luxury comfort and an exciting driving experience. It is powered by a 4-cylinder 191 HP engine, though there is a turbo option that produces 250 HP. Either offer plenty of power for merging into traffic and passing on the highway, but one is clearly more fun to drive—guess which one?

In sedan or hatchback form, this car gets an EPA-estimated 28 mpg in the city and up to 37 mpg on the highway. Adding AWD reduces these figures by one to three miles per gallon, but that’s not too bad, all things considered.

Fellow writer Connie Peters gushes over its design, “On the exterior, I love the Mazda front grille design (the company’s “KODO” design language), the power moonroof, LED headlights (and tail lights), and 18″ wheels.”

It’s Comfortable, and the Tech Isn’t Overwhelming

It’s a comfortable car, with supportive seats and a quiet interior. However, the rear seat is a bit cramped for taller passengers. You can access 13.2 cubic feet of cargo space in the trunk, which is decent. However, storage space for personal items and water bottles is a bit lacking.

The tech is on the minimalist side, allowing drivers to relax and focus on the road. The 8.8-inch infotainment screen sits a bit far back in the dash, making camera views seem small, but it has modern bells and whistles such as wireless Apple CarPlay/Android Auto.

The Mazda3’s Standard safety features include:

Safety features in smaller cars are especially appreciated, since it can often be difficult for larger trucks and SUVs to see you on the road. Mazda3’s safety suite includes:

  • Forward collision warning with automatic braking
  • Adaptive cruise control
  • Lane keeping assistance
  • Lane departure warning
  • Drowsy driver monitor
  • Blind spot warning

Does the 2026 Toyota Corolla Provide Enough Value?

With its starting price of $22,925, the 2026 Toyota Corolla provides tons of savings. It has a pretty good amount of power, but give yourself a little extra time to pass others. I wouldn’t call it slow; it’s just not as athletic or performance-oriented as the Mazda3. It generates 165 horsepower from its small-but-efficient 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine, unless you get the much sportier GR Corolla, which churns up 300 horsepower from a three-cylinder engine. Yes, you read that right.

Our own Scotty Reiss shares, “The leatherette interior is comfortable and feels sophisticated; head up display on our fully-loaded Premium Plus Corolla model lets me keep my eyes on the road. There was traffic, but it didn’t bother me. There were traffic lights, and those didn’t bother me, either. It’s nice to be in a car that makes you feel completely in charge, close to the road, to really experience the drive.”

The gas model gets an EPA-estimated 32 mpg in the city and up to 41 mpg on the highway. Then the Corolla Hybrid gets an EPA-estimated 53 mpg in the city and up to 46 mpg on the highway.

The Toyota Corolla Offers a Lot for the Price, With Just the Right Amount of Space and Tech

Comfort is adequate in the Corolla, with supportive seats. Wind and road noise are a little intrusive. It offers a bit more passenger room than the Mazda3, making it much easier to install child seats. You can access up to 13.1 cubic feet in the truck, which is a little tight. However, there is a little more storage for personal items to take advantage of.

It has plenty of standard tech, such as an 8.0-inch touchscreen and wireless Apple CarPlay/Android Auto. But remote start is only available with a subscription, unfortunately. For the price, there is a decent amount of screens and technology. With Toyota’s safety suite, you get features like:

  • Adaptive cruise control
  • Forward collision mitigation
  • Lane departure mitigation
  • Lane keeping assistance
  • Blind-spot warning

The 2026 Subaru Impreza Packs Tons of Value

If you’re ready to adventure while saving, the 2026 Subaru Impreza offers 8.7 inches of ground clearance to easily get you to your campsite. Plus, it’s a bit more athletic and fun to drive than the Corolla, but it’s not as sporty as the Mazda3, unless you upgrade to the RS trim. It produces more horsepower than the Corolla from its 2.0-liter boxer four-cylinder engine, though, up to 180 horsepower. The Sport model boasts 150 horsepower.

Adventure mom, Kristen Brown shares, “If I were young, single, and looking to buy my first car, I would look seriously at the Impreza. If not for single youngins, this would also be a great commuter car for those who live in areas that experience snow and rain on a regular basis, or small city families who find parking a challenge.”

The base engine gets an EPA-estimated 27 mpg in the city and up to 33 mpg on the highway. Upgrading to the more powerful engine provides about 29 mpg combined. It’s also the only compact sedan in this comparison that comes standard with all-wheel drive, no matter the trim, making it safer in regions with varying weather conditions, and, of course, for added performance.

The Interior is Thoughtful and Intuitive

Comfort is another area where the Impreza shines with a smooth ride and peaceful interior. It has the most space for passengers, making it ideal for taller folks. The rear doors open wide, making it easy to install child seats.

The trunk offers up to 20.4 cubic feet of cargo space that expands to 50 cubes when the seats are folded down. Plus, there’s extra storage under the cargo floor. But the space for personal items and the cup holders is noticeably small.

The Impreza has the most standard tech with an eye-catching 11.6-inch touchscreen, keyless entry, push-button start, dual-zone climate control, and wireless Apple CarPlay/Android Auto. But the center screen doesn’t have the best resolution.

When safety becomes a part of the conversation, we’ve always sung high praises for Subaru’s Eyesight safety suite because it looks out for you. We also like that these features are included:

  • Adaptive cruise control
  • Forward collision warning
  • Lane keeping assistance
  • Lane departure warning

Which Car Has the Most Value?

To get the most for your dollar, the 2026 Toyota Corolla is the most well-rounded option. It gets the job done while being capable and efficient. Plus, there’s enough space for children’s seats, and you can add all-wheel drive and upgrade to a hybrid engine.

While it may have a louder interior than the Impreza and Mazda3, it still has plenty of comfort and a nice amount of standard tech to enjoy.

However, it’s hard to ignore the spicy driving dynamics and luxury feeling that the Mazda3 offers if having fun behind the wheel is important. Also, the Subaru Impreza is the optimal choice if you need more space for your passengers and cargo.
