Lucy Liu Is Now a Car Girl, Thanks to Mercedes-Benz. But Which Model Should She Drive?
The luxury car maker has a new voice, and she's a badass woman.

Lucy Liu is the newest car girl in our orbit. Get ready to hear her velvety notes of authority as Liu takes over as the voice of the luxury car maker Mercedes-Benz. The company just announced that the award-winning actress, producer, director, and activist will take on the role of the voice of the brand, starting with an ad that dropped yesterday.
Throughout the last several decades, Mercedes-Benz has hired actors to voice their commercials; it’s a strategic move that lends a familiar note of empathy and authority to the company’s advertising. For the last 15 years, Jon Hamm has voiced the Mercedes-Benz ads, bringing his Mad Men-esque credibility to the message.
You may have remembered other actors voicing car ads: John Cena is the recognizable voice of Honda; Matthew McConaughey has been known for voicing Lincoln ads, and John Cusack was, for a while was the voice of Chevrolet. But a female actor as the voice of a car brand? It’s well overdue.
This story is 100% human-researched and written based on actual first-person knowledge, extensive experience, and expertise on the subject of cars and trucks.
Are Women Better Spokespeople? The Data Says Yes

Choosing a woman to voice ads is a growing trend. Mercedes-Benz points to the power of the female voice in connecting with both women and men; ads voiced by women tend to be more memorable and are better liked by younger consumers.
While we’re used to hearing women, and famous women, in commercials, it’s less common to hear them voicing car ads. Until now, that is.

A Big Step for Mercedes-Benz Chief of Marketing, Melody Lee

“It’s a big day for @mercedesbenzusa, yes, but also for 10-year-old Melody Liu, who told everyone at school that @lucyliu was her cousin 😬” Lee shared in an Instagram post announcing the partnership.
But that Lee and team chose Liu seems like kismet: The team listened to hundreds of voices in a blind test; they didn’t know the name of the person providing the voiceover until she was chosen, so it was a delight when it turned out to be Lucy Liu.

A Great Move for Mercedes-Benz, Too

It’s not surprising that Mercedes-Benz went with a badass woman who isn’t afraid to speak her mind, to stand up for others, and who takes on incredible acting roles — she starred in films including Kill Bill, Charlie’s Angels, and Kung Fu Panda. Liu actively speaks out for human rights, served as an ambassador for UNICEF, and is a spokesperson for the Human Rights Campaign.
And that’s exactly the character that the cars exude: Confidence, character, and capability.

So, Which Car Will Lucy Liu Pick For Her own?

As much as I love this news, I also love envisioning Liu in her own Mercedes-Benz, because you know there’s one in her driveway now. Which one should she drive? The G-Wagen seems a natural, though I’d recommend the all-electric G580. But the 3-row GLS (which is the car in the first ad that Liu voiced) will give her enough space for all her people and things, and provide the perfect haven for getaways, both daily and bucket-list.

But a Celebrity Needs a Rock-Star Ride

I also hope we’ll see Liu in a Maybach—hopefully an electric Maybach—when she attends awards ceremonies and big events. Though it’s a risk, if she’s chauffeured in the rear seat of a Maybach, she may never want to go back to riding around in regular cars. It’s that much of a spoiler.
But it may also spark inspiration: to actually appear in a Mercedes-Benz ad, too. And that would be a great thing too: To see Lucy Liu as the face of Mercedes-Benz, too.
