Buy the Updated 2027 VW Atlas? Or Go With an Older Model? What You Need to Know.

The redesigned 2027 VW Atlas will be here in the fall of 2026 with a district style, better tech, increased passenger space, and modern tech.

To wait or not to wait—this is the question that the 2027 VW Atlas raises. The new model year brings massive upgrades to this three-row VW SUV and we’ve been up close and personal with the new style, design, tech, and features—in both the original and the redesign. For 2027 it looks and feels like a whole new car.

But the outgoing 2025 and 2026 models still stand out, offering plenty of extra space, and the ability to accommodate passengers in the third row, all while delivering on the comforts, sharp design and key features family car buyers crave.

So, this puts potential VW Atlas buyers in an interesting position: should they wait and pay the premium for the all-new, updated model, or cash in on the savings by buying an “older” model? Based on what we saw at the NY Auto Show, here’s what we think.

This story is 100% human-researched and written based on actual first-person knowledge, extensive experience and expertise on the subject of cars and trucks.

The 2027 VW Atlas Promises More Power and Better Efficiency

The 2027 VW Atlas has a standard 2.0-liter turbocharged inline-four engine. It’s the same engine that’s used in the outgoing model. However, for the new SUV, horsepower has been increased to 282, up 13 ponies from the 2026 model. This power bump may not seem like a lot, but VW shares that it will have a slightly better fuel economy.

Currently, the 2026 VW Atlas gets an EPA-estimated 20 mpg in the city and up to 27 mpg on the highway. According to VW, though, the 2027 will get better mileage, thanks to a critical tune to the engine, improved cooling, and a more aerodynamic design, so the extra horsepower is a bonus. No exact mileage figures have been announced, though. It doesn’t have a hybrid engine, at least not yet—but one is expected to arrive by 2030.

Because the torque rating hasn’t gone up, the towing capacity remains at 5,000 lbs. as long as you opt for all-wheel drive, and that’s plenty of towing power for most families. Most don’t tow more than 3,500 lbs.

The 2027 VW Atlas Is Bigger Than Before, But Spacing is the Same

The 2027 Atlas is one inch longer than before, but its height and width remain the same. Therefore, the cargo and passenger space figures are identical to the 2026 model. That’s not necessarily a bad thing, though, since the previous generation had a very respectable amount of space.

When the third row is in use, it has 20.6 cubic feet of space, which is just enough to fit some luggage, a grocery haul, or a stroller. With the third row folded, families have up to 55.5 cubic feet for larger items. If all seats are folded, the VW Atlas boasts a total of 96.6 cubic feet.

Because the cargo and passenger space is identical to the previous generation, space isn’t a strong argument to buy the newer model. But there are a few more aspects that may sway you.

Modern Tech in the 2027 VW Atlas Makes a Difference

VW is leaning heavily into modern technology with the 2027 model year by putting a larger, 15-inch multimedia screen in the mid and higher level trims and saving the smaller 12.9-inch display for the base model. Like the 2026 model, the 10.5-inch driver display is fully digital and customizable, too, and is carried over. Don’t fix it if it ain’t broke, right?

Adventure Mom, Natalie Merola notes that, “Having the 12-inch multimedia touchscreen is an unsung hero in this car. I loved that it was easy to set up via Bluetooth or USB-C. Having Apple CarPlay makes it easy and familiar to swipe through and access my maps, music, and calls without having to learn another system.”

Connectivity wasn’t an issue with the 2026 model, as I was able to connect my iPhone to it easily. And since you’re never the only one with a phone, the new Atlas features dual wireless phone chargers, so the driver and passenger can charge their phones simultaneously. The 2026 model offered just a single wireless phone charger.

One notable change includes the introduction of a multifunction dial to control the driving modes and audio levels. This way, you don’t have to solely rely on touch-sensitive controls, which can seem a bit distracting. Artificial intelligence has made its way into the cabin, too, with Premium Speech, which is a generative AI designed to help with natural language tasks, like “Set the cabin temperature to 68 degrees,” or “Turn on the passenger’s massage seat function.” Of which, by the way, are new to the 2027 model.

Then there’s the Atmospheres feature. It was introduced in 2026, but it’s been refined for the 2027 model, coordinating lighting and audio settings specifically for the new generation of Atlas. If matching the lights to the audio isn’t your vibe, that’s cool—the interior lighting can be customized with 30 different colors for the higher-level trims, and up to 10 for the lower levels.

There’s More For Everyone

You can’t claim “smarter tech” and “premium features” without adding more for the rear passengers, too. The 2026 model had six USB-C charging ports throughout the interior. The 2027 VW Atlas features seven, so every passenger in the second or third row can charge their devices.

There are new comfortable features in the 2027 VW Atlas for the entire family to enjoy, including an available four-way massage function in the front seats and ventilated seats in the second row.

The new air vents in the B-pillars have been redesigned to keep rear passengers more comfortable, and those in the rear benefit from new sunshades, which are now standard for all trims. Moms who regularly have their hands full will benefit the most from the power rear tailgate, which is also now a standard feature for all trims of the 2027 model. The 2026 model can’t say the same.

But That 2027 VW Atlas Style…

Motivation to wait for the 2027 VW Atlas could be intensified by its new sleek style and attractive redesign that features a bold, more confident personality. It’s framed by stacked LED headlights, a masked upper grille, and a striking hood.

The illuminated VW badge and grille are so unique and hard to miss on the road. It sets it apart from all the other SUVs that aren’t exactly memorable, as they all look the same. This feature was available in 2026 for the SE, Technology, and higher trims, but it’s standard for all trims but the base on the 2027 model.

Also, the 2027 Atlas has a sleeker side profile with available illuminated door handles and puddle lamps for an upscale, luxury feeling. This is something that we love on the current model, that’s only getting better. New 20- and 21-inch machine alloy wheel designs complete the look with exclusive new shades of Blackberry, Sacramento Green, and Sandstone paint.

The interior has been revamped with real wood accents—not faux wood like the 2026 model—and the choice between Nappa and Varenna leather upholstery (the 2026 model used Vienna leather), contrasting colors accented by sharp stitching, and soft-touch surfaces. Pebble grey, moody black, and dark grey, and an all-new deep wine palette provide a new level of elegance.

Is the 2027 VW Atlas Worth Waiting For?

Yes, the 2027 VW Atlas is worth waiting for if you want everything you love about the current model, which has been out since 2017 with minor updates in 2024, to be dialed in to provide more comfort, convenience, and luxury.

The new Atlas is a little sportier and slightly larger with more refinement and modern tech to make daily driving and longer trips more enjoyable. Plus, there are new features like the available massaging seats to take the stress out of long pickup lines.

The 2026 VW Atlas starts at $39,310, and the top-spec SEL Premium R-Line model increases the price to $54,630. Pricing for the 2027 Atlas hasn’t been released, but it’s safe to expect a price bump. It will be here in the fall of 2026, so realistically, that’s not too far away.

While the upgrades are impressive, they aren’t shattering the glass ceiling. The 2026 Atlas and older models have similar features that the redesign builds upon. But stay tuned, our first drive impressions are on the way!
