I was a “theater kid” in high school, during the early 2000’s when Wicked was making its debut on the Broadway stage. It was the new hot musical at the time, so, naturally, I grew up with Wicked.
Not casually, but in a belting-every-lyric-to-Defying-Gravity kind of way. So naturally, I grew up to be a Wicked obsessed adult. I’ve already been to the theater twice to see Wicked: For Good and cried both times, absolutely no shame.
As someone who lives in both the world of pop culture and cars, it got me thinking: If the iconic characters of Oz were navigating modern life today, what would they be driving?
This story is 100% human-researched and written based on actual first-person knowledge, extensive experience, and expertise on the subject of cars and trucks.
Wicked’s Star, Elphaba, Would Take Charge in a Tesla Cybertruck
If there’s one character who would never blend in, never follow the rules, and never apologize for taking up space, it’s Elphaba. She defies blending in and refuses to follow the rules, a presence as polarizing and talked about as the vehicle she’d drive in modern Oz: the Tesla Cybertruck.
Elphaba has never been interested in fitting in, and neither has the Cybertruck. She would be driving the most disruptive vehicle on the road. At first glance, the Cybertruck feels cold, angular, and intimidating, just like Elphaba’s outward appearance.
But beneath Elphaba’s and her Cybertruck’s armored exterior is serious intelligence, innovation, and power. They are both electric, forward-thinking, and willing to challenge the norms.
Glinda Needs Something Powerful Yet Elegant
Instead of a bubble, Wicked’s Glinda is pulling up in a pink (of course) Mercedes-Benz G-Wagen: iconic, elevated, and impossible to ignore. From the outside, the G-Wagon is polished perfection, bold, and dripping in status.
Much like Glinda herself, the G-Wagen is glamorous, adored, and always exactly where the spotlight lands. What makes the pairing so perfect is what’s underneath all that shine. The G-Wagon may be fashionable now, but it was built with real grit, capability, and resilience hidden inside a beautiful package, and that mirrors Glinda’s arc perfectly.
Beneath the pink, the popularity, and the perfectly rehearsed poise is a woman learning to stand on her own convictions. Throughout the story, she evolves and becomes powerful in a quieter, deeper way. The G-Wagen is the same- luxury on the surface and backbone at its core.
Fiyero Would Roll Up in a Modern Classic
In modern Oz, Fiyero is behind the wheel of a vintage Ford Mustang. His vehicle would have to have horsepower, history, and undeniable cool-kid energy. It’s loud in the right way, a little impractical, and turns heads when it pulls up, like Fiyero himself arriving at Shiz.
He’s all swagger on the surface, freedom in the driver’s seat, and a sense that he’s never quite headed anywhere specific, only wherever the yellow brick road of life will take him. Fiyero’s mustang is giving rebel, heartthrob, and horse-boy charm all at once.
Nessarose Needs Something Practical, Yet Lovable
Nessarose would choose to drive a Subaru Outback for its quiet reliability and sense of control in an unpredictable world. It’s practical, grounded, and built around safety, with every feature designed to protect and stabilize. Unlike the flashier cars in modern-day Oz, the Subaru Outback doesn’t demand attention, and neither does Nessarose at first.
It reflects her desire for structure and a life that feels manageable. As her story darkens, the vehicle choice makes more sense. This is someone who grips tightly to what feels reliable and steady, even when her emotions are anything but that.
The Wizard Needs Something Ostentatious and Loud
Without question, the Wizard of Oz would absolutely drive a Rolls-Royce Phantom. No other car does an illusion of power quite like it. The Phantom is enormous, extravagant, and engineered to project untouchable status, even when what’s under the surface is far more fragile.
It glides silently, cocooned in luxury, separating its driver from the real world, just as the Wizard hides behind spectacle, smoke, and myth. It’s not about performance or purpose; it’s only about presence. The Wizard’s entire authority is built on perception; there is no more fitting vehicle than the ultimate symbol of manufactured greatness.
Madame Morrible Desires to be Desired in a Bentley
Madame Morrible appreciates elegance and influence when it comes to what she’s driving. In modern Oz, she glides through the streets in a Bentley Flying Spur. This car is refined, imperious, and quietly devastating.
It’s the kind of luxury that doesn’t need to announce itself because everyone already knows who’s in charge. Plush on the surface, ruthless in intent, the Flying Spur mirrors Morrible’s own polished menace.
Boq Doesn’t Need Much—Just a Fiat 500
Boq would definitely be driving around Munchkinland in a Fiat 500. The Fiat 500 is charming in an unassuming way, loyal to a fault, and always trying its best to keep up with bigger, flashier cars on the road.
The Fiat isn’t built to dominate the road; it’s built to show up, to try, and to go faithfully where it’s driven. Much like Boq himself, it’s sweet, sincere, and a little over its head in the high-drama world of Oz.
The Cars We Picked Were for Fun and to Spark Imagination
I had so much fun pairing the characters of Wicked with the vehicle that matches their personas. The vehicles we choose to drive are never only about horsepower or aesthetics. The cars we drive show the world who we are, who we’re trying to become, and sometimes who/what we’re hiding behind.
Wicked taught so many of us that labels can be wrong, power can be manufactured, and goodness isn’t always pretty. Whether you’re defying gravity in a Cybertruck, gliding through life in a G-Wagon, gripping control in a Subaru Outback, or quietly showing up in a Fiat 500, there’s a little bit of Oz in all of us- just trying to find our way home.
