The Toyota Sequoia is Large and in Charge, But Fits into Daily Life Beautifully

The Toyota Sequoia Capstone can tow up to 9,000 lbs, but you wouldn't know it when you're behind the wheel—and that's why I loved it.

As one of the largest, most formidable-looking SUVs on the road today, the Toyota Sequoia competes in the full-size SUV segment with its impressive off-road capabilities, technology, and comfort.

With six trim levels to choose from and a price range of $64,520 for the base SR5 model and $86,010 for the Capstone, it’s no cheap truck—and the interior, towing capacity (of a whopping 9,000 lbs), and overall size can back up those prices.

However, what it lacks in third-row legroom and cargo space with the third row up is made up for in oversized captain’s chairs and comfort for everyone.

This story is 100% human-researched and written based on actual first-person knowledge, extensive experience, and expertise on the subject of cars and trucks.

I Was Immediately Smitten With the Toyota Sequoia Capstone

I can’t help it. I love the tough can-do look of the Toyota Sequoia, especially in the prestigious Capstone trim level—and while I’m not usually a fan of white vehicles, this one looks especially commanding in white with black trim. I call it the Stormtrooper look.

Paired with the Capstone’s prominent grille, LED headlights and taillights, and available 20-inch alloy wheels, the Toyota Sequoia looks ready to conquer every challenge from the urban streets to the Rocky Mountains. All while looking sleek and luxurious.

The Sequoia Isn’t Just Pretty—It’s Capable, Too

Under the hood, the 2024 Sequoia Capstone’s powerful i-FORCE MAX Twin-Turbo V6 Hybrid engine provides 427 horsepower and 583 Lb.-Ft. torque for more than enough acceleration and towing capabilities (up to 9,520 lbs when properly equipped). The Capstone trim adds an electronically controlled suspension system, multi-terrain select, and crawl control, so you can confidently leave the pavement and take the family camping, hiking, or kayaking.

My only gripe with this beast is its fuel economy (or lack thereof) and its incredibly small rear cargo area. If you’re buying the Toyota Sequoia for its passenger capacity, keep in mind you’ll need a roof-top luggage compartment or hitch-mounted luggage rack to get all of your passengers and their luggage from point A to point B.

But if you don’t need that third row, you can fold the seats down to make room for all your gear. The third row can also slide forward a few inches to increase the rear cargo area a little bit, and the adjustable cargo shelving system is pretty handy when you’re picking up groceries and want to stack things neatly.

The Interior Was Borderline Luxurious and Loaded with Technology

As much as the outside of the Toyota Sequoia makes me smile, the inside welcomes me with incredible comfort and technology. I love how spacious the interior is, how wide the seats are, and how the panoramic moonroof makes it feel like you’re a part of the great outdoors. Here in Texas, we call that elbow room.

Whatever you call it, it’s big and inviting, especially when you’ve got kids who want to bring their friends home for a sleepover and there are duffle bags and pillows and blankets and school backpacks to haul. I kept a friend’s kids the week we had the Toyota Sequoia and was so glad we had such a big, comfy SUV.

Heated and ventilated leather-trimmed seats in the front and second rows, tri-zone climate control, charging ports, and drink holders for every passenger all add up to make this one luxurious ride. The latest infotainment system, complete with a touchscreen display, smartphone integration, and an optional premium audio system, ensures seamless connectivity and entertainment on every journey.

Additionally, advanced driver assistance features, such as adaptive cruise control, lane-keeping assist, and automatic emergency braking, provide added peace of mind for both short commutes and long-distance travel.

What You Need to Know About Trim Levels and Pricing

The Toyota Sequoia is a versatile SUV, and that’s most obvious when it comes to the trim levels, how they differ, and their varying prices. I reviewed the top-of-the-line Capstone, but here’s what else you should know.

  • i-FORCE MAX Twin-Turbo V6 Hybrid Engine that generates 437 horsepower and 583 Lb.-Ft. Of torque, making it capable of towing up to 9520 lbs.
  • Seats up to 8, with a bench in the second row. Seven if you have captains’ chairs in the middle.
  • Up to 22 MPG Combined, more like 17 MPG in real life. Which isn’t great—so don’t go into Sequoia ownership expecting Prius numbers.
  • Six drive modes, including eco, normal, comfort, sport, sport +, and custom
  • The available Tow Technology Package offers a digital display rearview mirror and trailer backup guide, and power extending tow mirrors
  • 14” multimedia screen with wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto
  • 12.3-inch driver’s display + 10” HUD
  • 14-speaker premium JBL sound system
  • 2 120-volt outlets
  • LED auto-leveling headlights
  • Power extending running boards and hands-free lift gate

The Toyota Sequoia Capstone comes in several trim levels and price points, so no matter your preferences and needs, there’s a Sequoia for you.

  • SR5: This entry-level trim starts at $61,275 and comes with all of Toyota’s safety features
  • Limited: Positioned as a mid-range option, the Limited trim elevates luxury with premium materials and advanced safety features, appealing to buyers seeking a higher level of refinement. Starting Price: Starting Price: $67,675
  • Platinum: The Platinum trim represents the pinnacle of luxury and sophistication, offering an array of upscale features, including premium leather upholstery, advanced infotainment systems, and driver assistance technologies. Starting Price: $73,865
  • TRD Pro: starts at $79,110 and comes with specially tuned suspension, better shocks, and a front stabilizer bar in addition to 4-wheel drive and special TRD Pro badging and wheels.
  • Capstone: starts at $85,000, offers a luxurious touch with semi-aniline leather upholstery, real wood accents, and trim-specific 22-inch wheels. Enhanced interior lighting and a unique two-tone color scheme add a refined, high-end feel.

I’ll Be Reminiscing About the Toyota Sequoia For Some Time

The Toyota Sequoia offers a combination of style, comfort, performance, and capability. The rugged durability makes the Sequoia well-suited for a wide range of lifestyles and driving preferences, and the comfort and sophistication of the interior make it a worthy choice for buyers seeking a premium SUV experience.

Let’s hope for the next model year, they’ll add a bit more legroom and cargo space in the rear.
