Mercedes-Benz GLC AMG: Is it for You?

Hey Mercedes, let’s go for a drive upstate. I hear it’s pretty this time of year.

Forget Siri or Google, once you hop in, Mercedes is who you will talk to. This is no ordinary car. And after spending time driving through the beautifully adorned mountains in upstate New York, I have to admit, Mercedes gave me a taste of all that I was missing in an SUV. It’s no wonder the Mercedes- Benz GLC is the most popular car in the market.

Let’s Go for a Drive

I recently got to test drive the newly designed GLC family cars. The GLC SUV and Coupe and the Mercedes-AMG GLC 63. With a driving partner, we took turns driving these beautiful cars through scenic upstate New York. Each one was beautifully designed with luxury features, very comfortable to drive and provided a smooth ride. The AMG felt stronger and a little heavier than the GLC SUV and Coupe but what I can say all three had in common: you couldn’t feel how fast you were going. The ride is that smooth! Luckily, Mercedes lets you know (both on the map and on the projected speedometer).

The GLC Family Gets a Redesign and It Does Not Disappoint

Once you get inside of these beauties, you can appreciate the new details. Comfort and convenience are at its finest in the GLC models and Mercedes really gives you all the bells and whistles when it comes to design. Luxe quality finishes and wood trim elements adorn the interior. The cars come with a touch screen (10.25′ standard) along with the new “Hey Mercedes” voice control feature. The newly designed multifunction steering wheel comes with easy to use touch control and a multifunction touchpad in the center console. And I immediately noticed the augmented video for navigation with video images from the front-mounted camera which shows the driver’s surroundings, details, and info (known as MBUX). At first, I found this confusing but once I realized what it was I really liked it. Perfect for those moments where you can’t see the street signs- this feature makes sure you can read them clearly.

A Sportier Exterior

The redesign also gives GLC models a sportier look. What stood out to me was the grille. It’s strikingly strong and just stands out. The new models also come with standard high performance LED headlamps, chrome trim details, full LED taillights, redesigned bumpers, and 18-20′ light-alloy wheels.

Mercedes-Benz GLC AMG: Is it for You?

Let’s start with what it means. Aufrecht, Melcher, and Großaspach. It’s the division of Mercedes- Benz that produces performance cars. AMG is named after important engineers in the company’s history. And AMG in Mercedes is basically a more powerful division/trim. But it’s not your basic car. Stronger engines, high speed, superior handling. More power. For me personally, I’d probably go with the GLC 300- it’s a 4 cylinder model which means it’s gas efficient. But for someone (like an auto enthusiast) wanting a fun luxury car that offers more speed and power- the AMG is what they will want.

New Standard Features on the AMG GLC 63:

  • New infotainment system (MBUX) with AMG specific functions
  • Augmented Navigation System
  • Smartphone Integration (Apple CarPlay / Android Auto)
  • 10.25″ touchscreen
  • LED Headlamps
  • Upgraded AMG Performance steering wheel with haptic touchpads
  • 64-color ambient lighting and AMG illuminated door sills
  • AMG Performance exhaust system

The AMG GLC 63 SUV and Coupe models come with a handcrafted AMG 4.0L V8 Biturbo engines. The SUV has 469 horsepower and 479 lb-ft torque. The Coupe has 503 horsepower and 516 lb-ft. And the AMG models offer four different functions (basic, advanced, Pro, and Master) drivers can select for an even better driving experience.

How Much?

Remember, there are different models, trims, and options when it comes to the GLC family. Here’s a breakdown.

Mercedes-Benz GLC 300 (RWD) SUV $ 42,500

Mercedes -Benz GLC 300 4MATIC SUV $ 44,500

Mercedes -AMG GLC 63 SUV $ 73,750

Mercedes -Benz GLC 300 4 MATIC Coupe $ 50,000

Mercedes -AMG GLC 63 Coupe $ 76,500

Mercedes -AMG GLC 63 S Coupe $ 84,100

Is it Worth the Splurge?

I think so. I loved the way these cars handled, the style, and luxe details. And after a long day of driving, I felt great! Usually, a long car ride will leave you sore but there is a big difference when you drive a Benz. If you’re in the market for a new luxury car, I highly recommend giving Mercedes a test spin.

*Disclosure: I was invited to attend a press trip to test out the new Mercedes-Benz 2020 GLC models. All opinions are true and honest.
