For 2026 the Jeep Grand Wagoneer Got A Makeover and Now It’s More Jeep, Exactly as It Should Be

The new face of Grand Wagoneer is all Jeep. And then, a lot more.

The redesign of the Jeep Grand Wagoneer rebrands it as a “true Jeep“, which is exactly what it should have been when it was reintroduced a few years ago: a miltary-inspired front face, off-road capable with an even more capable trim option, and plushly comfortable inside.

One of the original luxury 4-wheelers, Jeep decided to celebrate the heritage of the Wagoneer (and more sophisticated Grand Wagoneer) but maybe too much; the company called it Wagoneer, not Jeep, and kept the original names for its trim lines rather than matching the rest of the Jeep lineup. The full-size SUV sort of got lost in the crowd.

But for 2026 Jeep Grand Wagoneer has been rebranded as a Jeep, has a lower starting price of just under $65,000 and features iconic Jeep details. And in a first that, in my opinion, is the biggest news for family SUVs maybe ever, it’ll be available as a plug-in hybrid with a range of 150 miles of all-electric driving.

This story is 100% human-researched and written based on actual first-person knowledge, extensive experience, and expertise on the subject of cars and trucks. Additionally, I was Jeep’s guest for this first look, but all opinions are my own.

I’m not going to bury the lede, as they say in the newsroom: The big story here is that in the late Winter or early Spring of 2026, the Jeep Grand Wagoneer will make its plug-in hybrid electric debut with a sizable battery, a 20-gallon gas tank, and a whopping output of 647 horsepower.

That means it’ll have a range of about 150 miles on a charge, and then the gas motor will kick in. Overall, the Jeep Grand Wagoneer 4xe will have a range of more than 500 miles.

[Note that for now, Jeep is calling this model a REEV, or range extended electric vehicle, but the prototype we saw had a 4xe badge on the rear. But with a range on the Grand Wagoneer 4xe that is 5 times more than any other 4xe, maybe it does deserve a fancy new name. More to come on that.]

What 150 Electric Miles Will Mean To You

You know the drill: hockey practice runs late. The kids are tired and hungry, and they have homework. You have to drop off the neighbor first. By the time you roll into the driveway, it’s 7 PM, and everyone still has dinner, homework, and showers ahead. There just isn’t time to go out of your way to get gas, even though the tank is on ‘E.’ You’ll do it in the morning.

Only, you forget. Or your kids overslept. Or the dog puked on the kitchen floor. You know, life. You finally get everyone in the car and realize you need gas. Now you’re starting the day with a time deficit, and the dominoes fall from there.

But if you could have plugged the car into the outlet in the garage, problem solved. And with 150 miles, you can drive all the errands, drop-offs, pick-ups, carpools, and more all week long before you need to charge the car. You can add miles with a standard household outlet, though a level 2 outlet will let you charge faster and less often (this is how I added a level 2 charger to my garage for less than $400).

And you don’t have to charge it if you don’t want to; just don’t forget to get gas.

What an Electric Motor Will Mean To Your Quality of Life

Then picture this: It’s really cold out/snowing/raining/hot and sticky, but you want to watch football/soccer/softball/lacrosse practice. You can sit in your car, adjust the climate control, and anyone not so invested in practice can plug in a laptop or a video game and do it … in silence. No loud engine, no emission fumes, no worry about carbon monoxide buildup inside or around the outside of the car. Just a quiet battery-powered cabin of loveliness.

The Jeep Grand Wagoneer is the first 3-row SUV to feature a PHEV powertrain, and you can probably tell, I’m pretty excited. I’m past my days of sitting in my Jeep to stay warm while my kids have practice, so really, I’m excited for you.

What Else is New For 2026?

The Trunk Space Behind The Third Row Of The 2026 Jeep Grand Wagoneer

While the 4xe plug-in hybrid electric version is big news—seriously, think about your routine and how much time and money you can save driving such a large SUV that many miles on electric—there’s a lot more news.

It starts with the new face. The Jeep Grand Wagoneer, which is not an extension of the Jeep Wagoneer S all-electric 2-row SUV, carries the new Jeep design language, a detail it does have in common with the Wagoneer S. Jeep calls the new front grille “cove lighting” or stadium lighting; the traditional 7-slot Sarge Grille is reinterpreted in an architectural panel that’s accented by lighting. It’s really quite stunning and both elevates the look of the Jeep Grand Wagoneer but also adds more of the Jeep DNA.

There’s a charge port on the driver’s side, and for now, it’s a standard J1772/CCS charger, but starting in 2027, it’ll come with a Tesla-style NACS charge port and soon Jeep will arrange for Grand Wagoneer drivers to charge at Tesla Superchargers. Jeep will provide a NACS adapter with 2026 models.

And then, just above the new lighting and grill is the classic Jeep badge.

The Jeep Grand Wagoneer is still all Wagoneer, though; it’s tall, it’s roomy, and it’s spacious, even in the standard wheelbase model. It has a lot of cargo space behind the 3rd row.

Inside, there’s a new multimedia screen with new graphics; it’s brighter and faster than the outgoing model. It’s a small detail, but when you need it, you’ll appreciate it.

A Simplified Trim Lineup Creates a New Culture for the Modern Wagoneer

I appreciate that when Wagoneer made its re-entry in 2021, Jeep preserved some of the original details, such as trim names. Heritage details are big thing these days, but while I love visiting my grandmother’s house, I don’t want to live there.

And that’s sort of how it felt when Jeep brought back the Wagoneer with original trim names: Series I, Series II, Series III. Being accustomed to the Jeep’s trim names—Laredo, Overland, 4xe, Summit—the heritage names threw me for a loop. For 2026, trim names where simplified to fit with what we expect from Jeep:

  • Grand Wagoneer $62,145 for front wheel drive; buyers can add 4WD for $3,000
  • Grand Wagoneer Limited has standard 4WD and starts at $71,140
  • Grand Wagoneer Summit is the top of the line and starts at $93,390
  • Each trim features a good number of luxury details, such as leather upholstery and premium sound
  • The Grand Wagoneer is offered in a long wheelbase with extra cargo space for an additional $3,000
  • Jeep hasn’t yet spelled out the trim levels for the 4xe, which will likely be offered in the upper trim levels.

What Hasn’t Changed for 2026

One of the saddest things about the Grand Wagoneer being lost in the crowd is that so many people overlooked how nice this SUV is.

It has great space, it is accommodating for families with kids in car seats. It has great cargo space for a full-size SUV—more than its competitors. It has quilted leather, massage seats, a panoramic sunroof and air vents, and USB ports for everyone.

The center row seats, available in either bench or captains chairs, slide and tilt so you can access the 3rd row even with a car seat installed—and there’s more than enough space for rear-facing car seats. They also fold and flip for flat cargo space. And, you can turn off the power seats (access on the multimedia system) so they can’t be moved by curious little fingers that like to push every button. Love that detail so much.

There are running boards, fixed or deployable, there is a hands-free liftgate, and roof rails. Off-roaders who will use the 4WD to get to a ski house or on a trail, the Laredo Altitude adds more capability and details like all-terrain tires and tow hooks.

The multimedia system has “hey Jeep” voice activation and in the upper trims you’ll get head up display, a panoramic sunroof, McIntosh premium sound, a front passenger screen and there’s a retractable screen just under the multimedia screen that hides a cubby with USB ports and a phone charge pad.

All models tow up to 10,000 lbs., also more than its competitors.

If You Can’t Wait, the Gas-Only Grand Wagoneer is On Sale Soon (If It Were Me, I’d Wait for the 4xe)

The gas-only Jeep Grand Wagoneer, with its new face, better price, and simplified lineup, will go on sale shortly (it’s in production right now). It is powered by the 420 HP twin-turbo 6-cylinder Hurricane engine, the same engine that powers the 2025 model.

But waiting has its benefits: not only 150 miles of electric driving range, but a lot more power: the 4xe is powered by the twin turbo 6-cylinder that, paired with the electric motor, delivers 647 HP and 620-lb.-ft. of torque. That’s a lot of power. And it certainly stands to compete for the title of ultimate Jeep—exactly what the Jeep Grand Wagoneer should be.
