We often forget that we live in such a crazy world when it comes to driving.
When was the last time you actually looked around before heading to your car? Did you have your keys in your hand or wait until you got to the car to start fumbling around your purse for them? Did you look in the backseat to make sure no one was there waiting for you? There are so many little precautions we should take when going to our cars, getting out, even simply being parked. Here’s how to practice good car safety.

A Girl’s Guide to Car Safety
- Be aware of your surroundings– before you head to your car, look around to make sure it’s safe to proceed.
- Have your keys in your hand– Most cars come with a key sensor which would not apply if you have this feature. But if you do not, always be sure to have your car keys in your hand before heading to the car. You become an easy target if you’re distracted looking into your purse for keys.
- Check the backseat– Quickly glance at your backseat before entering your car. If it’s dark out, unlock the car with your keys so it lights up.
- Always lock your doors– Local Police departments have been urging people to lock their car doors. Not only has there been a lot of theft lately, but locking your doors will prevent anyone from trying to get into your car as well.
- Do not leave valuables in the car (or in plain sight)- That Louis Vuitton bag in your front seat? Bad idea. Keep any valuable item out of sight while parked and driving.

- Never pull over for anyone– Many people have gotten hurt, robbed, even kidnapped for pulling over. Never pull over for anyone. If the car has “cop lights” and seems suspicious to you, drive to the nearest police station and call them on the way there.
- Don’t roll your windows all the way down– Back to valuables- having your windows down gives a thief easy access to your handbag or worse- to you.
- Carry protection– Some states do not allow pepper spray but there are other devices that can help keep you safe. A personal alarm can be kept on your keys or handbag. You can also carry a small flashlight. Some come with a spike at one end..just in case.
- Always tell someone where you are– Let a friend or family member know where you will be or share your location through your phone. If something happens, at least people will know where to look for you.

Practice Car Safety
When it comes to driving, remember: safety, first! Whether you are alone or with your children, these habits are important to practice. Sadly, the rate of car theft is high as well as human trafficking and even if you live in the safest town, you could still be a victim.
