Getting Gorgeous: Beat The Heat This Summer
With These Tips, Look Hot, No Matter How Hot It Gets
Every year, fashionistas Vera Sweeney and Audrey McClelland host an extravaganza in New York City called Getting Gorgeous. At this year’s event, held in June, many of the products showcased offered ways to enjoy the summer while surviving the heat and humidity.
Heat + Humidity = Problem Hair
For many women, particularly those of us endowed with curly hair, the summer’s humidity wreaks havoc with our locks. Whether we are tooling around in a convertible or inside in the A/C, we still suffer summer tonsorial indignities. The VO5 Salon Series Anti-Frizz + Shine Styling Cream, a lightweight but rich cream puts the kink back in your kinky hair, for under $5 a tube. It has acai berry, broccoli seed and sunflower extract, so you can really feel good about using this product. Also on show was VO-5’s newest scent, Pure Sunshine, which was crowdsourced by customers. And they were right; it
smells nice.
Natural SunCare
Block Island Organics has non-toxic sun care products that offer chemical free sun protection. The fragrance free, non comedogenic formula is particularly great if you exercise outdoors in summer – you won’t get that burning when sunscreen drips into your eyes since BIO doesn’t irritate your eyes. Titanium dioxide and zinc oxide block the sun’s harmful rays; aloe vera, shea butter and green tea extract keep your skin hydrated.
Dry Skin Rescue
If you did not heed that sunscreen warning, you might have dry, scaly summer skin. Vitabath can refresh you. The body wash comes in restorative scents like cucumber white tea or vanilla sugar, and you can clean without further drying out your skin. The travel sizes are great for popping in your bag if you are taking a plane for a summer getaway. The rich moisturizers, many in the same scents as the body wash, hydrate your summer battered skin with aloe vera, safflower, and olive oil.
A Good Fit Is Everything, Especially When Working Out
If you’re like some of us, working out in the wrong sports bra is almost as humiliating as some of the exercises you do. But Bali’s new line of bras takes the principles of a great exercise bra into daytime wear and brings the properties of a good bra to one you can exercise in. The Comfort Revolution bra is wireless, has actual cups and comes in SM, S, M, L, XL and 2X. A friend who is a DD was sized for the medium and reports not only that it’s a great fit, but comfortable for both exercising and regular wear. Sadly, there’s nothing you can do about the boob sweat.
Summer Beverages
Another way to celebrate summer is with refreshing light cocktails. Since everyone had taken the train or a cab to Getting Gorgeous, we could indulge in the vodka bar hosted by Voli Vodka. The mango coconut evokes tropical drinks sipped poolside or at the beach – two of the best ways we know to beat the heat and celebrate summer.
