Chevy Blazer EV Super Sport: This Midsize EV Is Also a Muscle Car, So We Went For a Spin

If you loved the Super Sport editions of Chevys in the past, this is how the tradition continues

What happens when you apply Chevy’s storied Super Sport treatment to the company’s all-electric midsize SUV? You get the 2025 Chevrolet Blazer EV Super Sport (quite the mouthful, I know). As you’d expect, this new $61,995 range-topping trim adds an extra dash of performance to an already excellent EV crossover. It also comes standard with dual-motor AWD and Super Cruise hands-free level 2+ semi-autonomous driving.

Last week I drove the Chevy Blazer EV Super Sport, or SS for short, on the road for a few hours and on track for a few laps, and it’s just what the doctor ordered. It keeps everything that’s great about the LT and RS trims – the design, comfort, space, tech, and range – but adds more power—615 HP, 650 lb.-ft. of torque—a firmer suspension, stronger Brembo brakes, larger 22-inch wheels, bespoke bumpers and side-sills, and even orange seat belts if you so choose.

This story is 100% human-researched and written based on actual first-person knowledge, extensive experience, and expertise on the subject of cars and trucks. Additionally, I was Chevy’s guest for this test drive, but all opinions are my own.

So, What’s Different Versus Other Blazer EV Models?

Unlike Chevy’s Z cars – which are serious performance cars – the company’s Super Sport vehicles tend to be sporty without compromising other areas, like practicality.

The Chevy Blazer EV Super Sport nails this.

With a 0-60mph time of just 3.4 seconds, it’s neck-snapping fast, but with an EPA rating of 303 miles, it doesn’t sacrifice range like its competitors. Likewise, the suspension is firmer, but still soft enough to deliver a comfortable ride.

Sport Brakes are a Must, and For Chevy, It’s Brembo

You also get Brembo brakes—the sport brake of choice for nearly all performance cars—in front with red Super Sport branding, and 22-inch wheels with the Super Sport logo embossed on them.

The additional performance is achieved by combining the larger 102kWh battery (which charges at a speed of up to 190kW) and more powerful rear motor from the RWD Blazer EV RS with the front motor from the FWD and AWD Blazer EV models. This enables the Wide-Open Watts mode with 615hp and 650 lb.ft of torque for maximum power.

It’s Not a ‘Z,’ but There is Z-Mode

Speaking of modes, the Chevy Blazer EV SS features Z-Mode, an additional drive mode which lets you pick between normal and sport steering, braking, acceleration, and sound calibrations. Z-Mode also unlocks launch control plus another mode called Competitive Mode, which disables one-pedal driving, loosens up stability control and simulates a limited-slip differential using brake torque vectoring to reduce understeer. Essentially, it allows a bit of wheel spinning and rear-end slippage for a little more drift on the track.

Cosmetically, the Blazer EV Super Sport has sportier front and rear bumpers with a larger front lip and a rear diffuser, clear rear tail lights, more aggressive side sills, and red SS badging all around. Existing colors aside, that sexy Habanero Orange exterior you see in my photos is unique to the Super Sport trim. Inside buyers have the option of a gorgeous black and gray interior with orange accents (and orange seat belts) you see in my pictures, or adrenaline red.

And How Does the Chevy Blazer Super Sport Drive?

Going into this first drive, and knowing I’d be getting some track time, I was expecting the Blazer EV SS to compete directly with other performance EV crossovers – like the Ford’s Mustang Mach-E GT, Kia’s EV6 GT, and Hyundai’s IONIQ 5 N. Obviously, I didn’t think Chevy’s all-electric mid-size SUV would be quite as hard core as some of these. After all, unlike the Blazer EV SS, these EVs compromise range for drag-strip bragging rights.

I was also pleased that the Blazer EV Super Sport didn’t sacrifice comfort for sportiness, like the EV6 GT and IONIQ 5 N do with their aggressively bolstered, tight-fitting, manually adjustable, non cooled (only heated) front bucket seats. However – quick acceleration aside – I didn’t find that the Blazer EV SS handles as well as the competition. It sticks to the Super Sport promise of sporty but not hard core, forgoing the sharpness, playfulness, and body control of these other performance EV crossovers.

I recently drove the Cadillac OPTIQ EV, and while not remotely as fast as in a straight line as the Blazer EV Super Sport, I found it more fun to drive. And while the OPTIQ handles better, it also delivers more features (massaging seats and Dolby Atmos), offers similar range, and even costs a few thousand less. But here’s the thing: the Blazer EV SS might be too soft for my tastes, but as a performance enthusiast, I’m in the minority.

Most folks will be perfectly happy with the sporty nature of the Blazer EV Super Sport. With its impressive acceleration (0-60mph time of just 3.4sec) and without making any major sacrifices vs. the other Blazer EV models, this new trim absolutely lives up to its Super Sport heritage. And did I mention that for just $395 you can get a Performance Package that includes performance brake rotors, low-metallic brake linings and summer tires?

It brings a ton of performance and value to the table without compromising range and comfort. Plus, it’s the first EV from Chevy to include YouTube, HBO Max, and Prime Video on its multimedia system to keep you busy while you’re charging. Then again, there’s still room for improvement. I was definitely expecting tighter, more responsive handling given the Super Sport credentials.

Like other Blazer EV models, the Super Sport trim lacks a frunk, Apple CarPlay, and Android Auto. The missing frunk is a bummer, but with 25.5 cubic feet of cargo space in the trunk (59.1 with the rear seats folded), there’s plenty of storage. Also, don’t let the lack of Apple CarPlay and Android Auto faze you. Chevy’s Android Automotive-based infotainment system is refined and easy to use, and provides excellent route planning—so you can take all the fun roads.
