People love to complain about holiday creep: Christmas decorations in October, 4th of July merchandise in May, Halloween candy in August. But back to school is quirky – in the northeast, public school often extend to the end of June, and kids return to school after Labor Day. In the South, children are already back in school.

So the Kelley Blue Book list of of the best 10 Back To Schools Cars 2015 is either just in time or a too early reminder that summer is winding up. Either way, it offer a list of cars that are “practical, functional, safe and affordable,” which means that they cost about $20,000. [For used car shopping tips for teens, read this.]

The 2015 Honda Fit tops the list with one of the lowest prices, fuel economy of 41 mpg and versatility in its ability to haul gear despite its subcompact size. It also includes safety features to put a parent’s mind at ease: rear view camera, lane watch and text to voice so your teen will keep his eyes on the road.

The 2015 Nissan Versa, at just $14,180, is the lowest price car on the list, yet it, too, gets 40 mpg on the highway – AND it seats five. When we reviewed an earlier version of the Versa the driver was surprised at how roomy the car felt.

And the 2015 Mini Hardtop 2-Door, rounding out the list at number 10, probably wins in the looks department Any parent who buys this as their kid’s school ride will surely go to the head of the class. The zippy, adorable car gets 40 mpg, so your chid might actually be able to afford to fill the tank, too.
