Apple CarPlay: iPhone Integration in Cars

CarPlay In-Car Entertainment System Debuts

My children have a strict rule – no bananas in cars. Though they love bananas, the smell, in cars only, turns their stomachs.  Apples are another story.

Good thing, because Apple just debuted its in-car entertainment system, CarPlay, where an iPhone integrates with the car.

Sync with Siri

With the latest iPhone (iPhone 5, 5C or 5S), you can use your car’s touchscreen or steering wheel buttons to access Siri. This means you can make calls, listen to voicemails, hear and dictate text messages, get directions via Apple Maps and hear music through Spotify.

Your iPhone has to have iOS 7, and it connects to the car via Apple’s Lightning connector.

CarPlay is first coming to Volvo, Ferrari and Mercedes-Benz cars, and eventually to other brands.

What is great about this is that even if the car’s infotainment system is easy to master, it is yet another tech learning curve. But if you already have an iPhone, you can seamlessly use your content in the car, and stay more focused on driving.

Of course, you have to have a car with a touchscreen; if you drive an older model, you might still be retrofitting with your clamshell phone.
