As your family grows, you want to indulge your kids with everything: Learning toys, organic produce, all the sports leagues, and family trips to Disney. But in the family budget, something usually has to give. Unfortunately for most parents, that can mean the family hauler. You’re either driving your mom’s old Ford Aerostar that she drove you around in, or you’re packing the kids into something small, like a Subaru Forester or a Honda CR-V.

We say nay to that notion. Is it possible to save money on the car to take everyone everywhere and still get all the features you want and need—including a 3rd row without compromising a nice car?

Yes, you can. Here are our favorite 7 or even 8-seater SUVs that start around $30,000 to $40,000 and top out around $55,000.

And then, one is a total splurge for excellent reasons.

This story is 100% human-researched and written based on actual first-person knowledge, extensive experience, and expertise on the subject of cars and trucks.

1. 2026 Kia Sorento, Priced from $32,000-$47,000

The Kia Sorento is an all-time favorite 7-seater SUV, for many reasons. First, you can choose between two gas-only engines, an excellent standard hybrid setup, or you can buy one as a plug-in hybrid. Then, it comes really nicely loaded with tech, even at the base model level. There’s even an off-road-focused trim, too.

You can choose between center-row captain’s chairs and a bench seat, and even the top-of-the-line X-Pro SX Prestige is affordable while still being stylish and loaded with luxuries like leather upholstery and a panoramic sunroof. Plus, if you need off-road capabilities, this one has you covered.

Adventure Mama, Kristen Brown explains, “With a usable third row (or tons of space when the third row is folded), it’s flexible enough for families, adventurers, or anyone who wants the option. Finally, it feels like we found a balanced SUV: it’s not pretending to be a hardcore off-roader, but it channels the energy in a way that makes even the most mundane chores feel fun.”

2. 2026 Subaru Ascent, Priced from $40,000-$53,000

The Subaru Ascent is one of the most-loved 7-seater SUVs on and off the road. It’s a total package with solid reliability, standard all-wheel drive, Subaru’s great Eyesight driver-assist safety system, and, in this model, a third row.

We love Subaru’s rough and ready attitude; it’s good with all things messy, from snowy and muddy roads to kiddos who seem to always leave a sticky mess in their wake: Durable interiors are built to be easy to clean while still being comfortable and attractive.

Regarding the Subaru Ascent Onyx Edition, Kristen Brown says, “It reminded me of the days before I had kids when I sought out spots just like it in my Forester, making notes of future spots to camp with my husband. The Onyx reminded me that it’s still possible with two girls under three, and I need to make an effort to explore more often.”

3. 2026 Mitsubishi Outlander, Priced From $29,000-$55,000

Mitsubishi always impresses us with a more-for-the-money attitude, but once they added a plug-in hybrid (PHEV) option that is fast charging at virtually any charging level, we had to do a double-take.

The company’s partnership with Nissan yields some nice features in the Mitsubishi Outlander, but the brand’s commitment to electric vehicles also add’s to the Outlanders appeal. It has an easy driving nature with room for seven and solid fuel economy, which simply adds to the savings.

Our own Scotty Reiss explains, “Despite the small size of the 3rd row, Mitsubishi was thoughtful about its use. First, the center row is on a rail and slides forward and back to accommodate 3rd row passengers. Then, the middle seat back in the center row folds down to provide cup holders and an arm rest.”

4. 2026 Hyundai Santa Fe Priced From $35,000-$50,300

There’s another 7-seater SUV that fell into our hands, known as the 2026 Hyundai Santa Fe. With the viable hybrid engine, your family can save more at the gas pump during daily commutes and road trips!

Best of all, the savings come with plenty of comfort and style with a unique look and modern tech to make life easier for every passenger. The Santa Fe XRT trim has rugged upgrades for family adventures and getting to the campsite without breaking a sweat.

Kristen Brown shares, “The third row is more comfortable than most as it has more legroom, but the seats could use more padding. They do, however, offer great visibility, their own USB ports, speakers, an AC/heater vent in the wall below the window (with temperature and flow adjusters, too), and cupholders.”

5. 2026 Chevrolet Traverse, Priced From $40,800-$56,000

Where do I start: The Chevrolet Traverse is THE one to 7-seater SUV to beat, especially for the price. It has a full-size 3rd row big enough for adults! It provides great space for kids’ car seats.

Plus, thanks to a recent redesign, the Traverse is loaded with modern tech, from the Google-based voice assistance system to the option of adding Super Cruise hands-free assistance. Also, there is now a Z71 off-road capable trim for those who need to drive off pavement with confidence.

Fellow driver and writer Jenn Mitchell, shares, “The third row adds welcome flexibility, though it’s best suited for kids or teens. It works for short trips with adults, but longer drives are more comfortable in the first two rows. The Z71 trim’s upgraded materials and supportive seats help make long days of errands or campus shuttling feel easier, and the second-row captain’s chairs make accessing the third row simple.”

6. 2026 Nissan Pathfinder, Priced From $38,000-$53,000

The Nissan Pathfinder is one of the 7-seater SUV OGs: It’s been a staple of the SUV class for decades. We love its capability on and off pavement. This rugged SUV has enduring reliability and the ability for families to put it through literally anything, as it emerges unscathed.

In 2024, it got even tougher with the off-roading oriented Pathfinder Rock Creek edition, designed for adventure, overlanding, and the like. But there are still plush, pampering editions too for those who prefer the luxury of being able to get there in style.

Travel Mama, Chasist Valeaquez shares “The 3rd row has legroom for two grown children, air vents, cup holders, and USB ports. On the back of the captain chairs is a button for the 3rd row of passengers to push that will make the chairs fold and slide forward, making it easy to climb out.”

7. 2026 Honda Pilot, Priced from $43,000-$54,000

We’re still celebrating the Honda Pilot for the 2024 redesign and updates that came with the 2026 model year. We excitedly climbed in and saw all the wonderful changes and additions that make this 7-seater SUV better than ever: More space, under-floor storage, fantastic new technology.

And, what didn’t change: A removable center row middle seat that allows you to choose between a bench and captains chairs on a whim. The new rugged Trailsport edition is even more capable and comes in a head-turning blue called Sky Blue Pearl.

Kristen Brown is back again to explain, “I was very skeptical about the 3rd row on the Pilot because from the outside, I figured there’d be no way the Pilot would accommodate my 5’8” frame. But it did. And quite well. My knees weren’t jammed into the back of the second row seat, my shoulders weren’t pressed up against the side of the car, and I didn’t feel like I was being stuffed into a tin can.”

8. 2026 VW Atlas, Priced From $39,000-$57,000

When VW began its journey from building compact, sporty cars to larger SUVs for families, we wondered if they would get it right; Could this Germany-based company really get how American families live in their cars?

Well, the VW Atlas answers that beautifully with a massive YES. With a full-size third row, center and this row seats that can accommodate kid’s car seats better than even much larger SUVs, and really tech, the Atlas delivers everything expanding families need in an 7-seater SUV.

Fellow driver and writer Natalie Merola explains, “Passengers who need to stay powered up have ample charging: USB-C ports in all three rows plus a 115V household outlet in the second row. The power tilting and sliding panoramic sunroof lets in the sun or starlight. And even though this SUV is built for adventure, passengers will find it quiet enough to take a nap when they’re tired.”

9. 2026 Mazda CX-90, Priced From $38,000-$56,000

Mazda inspires tons of love among its buyers with its sporty drive experience. From the ultra fun Miata Roadster to the full-size Mazda CX-90, it never compromises on acceleration, handling, or ride quality.

This is the SUV for the driver in the family who wants a great driving experience with room for all the kids and gear. Adding to that is the wide array of interior design choices, from stylish to luxury, for a 7-seater SUV that competes with the basics as well as luxury options.

Natalie Merola is back to share, “A car door that opens 90 degrees?! Oh, yes. It sounds so simple, and it is, but it is a luxury to have ample space to get the kids in and out of the second row with ease on both your door hinge and sanity. Whether your kids are in a booster seat or old enough to not need a safety seat, this feature makes it easy, even for older parents visiting.”

And This 7-Seater SUV Is Worth the Splurge: 2026 Toyota Grand Highlander, Priced From $41,000-$59,000

Realizing that families need more— space, tech, comforts, and options—Toyota built this SUV from the ground up. And it’s a home run with, you guessed it, MORE!

The massive third row is very comfortable and the center row seats are too. The technology in this SUV is top notch, from the “Hey Toyota” voice activation system to navigation either built-in or enhanced, with a subscription.

Toyota Grand Highlander buyers can choose from basic to luxury, and between a gas-powered, hybrid, or Hybrid Max power train with more power. For buyers who intend to keep their family SUV for a while, with reliability and features that will go the distance, this is a great investment.

Kristen Brown is back again to share, “Even when I installed my toddlers’ car seats, there was still a plethora of floor space–perfect for a purse, lunch box for road trips, water bottle, filming gear, a diaper bag–you name it. With the third row folded, the trunk space is enormous. But even with the third row in use, the space behind the third row was impressive. “

Not all 7-seater SUVs are created equal, so finding the right one for you, with room for kids car seats, third row passengers, and amenities to keep everyone happy is key to time well spent in the car.
