The 2026 VW Tiguan SEL R-Line Turbo Will Make You (And Your Family) Feel Like Celebrities

The VW Tiguan's redesign transformed the mainstream family SUV into what feels like a luxury SUV. You can thank me later.

If you Google a VW Tiguan, it’ll tell you that the Tiguan is a “near luxury” SUV, like it’s teetering over the boundary between a run-of-the-mill SUV and something that would rival the likes of its Audi cousins. It was always known for being spacious, practical, and handsome at a price that made most people wonder, “That’s it? That’s all you paid for this?”

Then the VW Tiguan was overhauled last year, and while the looks have changed, the attainability hasn’t. The base model starts at $32,280 and goes up to $44,560 for the top-tier SEL R-Line Turbo, the one I reviewed. Yes, you can fit the kids, the dog, and the luggage into a car that feels like luxury, but didn’t demand luxury pricing. No wonder they’re so popular.

After a week driving the new VW Tiguan I can promise you—you’ll feel like a celebrity.

What Is Life Like With the 2026 VW Tiguan?

During my time with the VW Tiguan I ran it through the gauntlet. I drove from Rock Hill, South Carolina, to Asheville, North Carolina, and back. Plus, I used it for errands and adventures around town. It’s a comfortable companion for long stretches of backcountry roads and crowded city streets, with little to complain about. Benefits include its performance, standard features, and space. However, it could benefit from refined tech and more sound-dampening materials.

As far as pricing is concerned, that’s a large part of the VW Tiguan’s appeal. The 2026 VW Tiguan starts at $32,280, and the top-spec SEL R Line Turbo trim increases the price to $44,560. Not too shabby when you look at the cost of its competitors from other near-luxury SUVs. Part of what made it so easy to love was its standard creature comforts, like heated seats, a 12.9-inch touchscreen, a 10.25-inch driver’s display, a wireless phone charging pad, keyless entry with push-button start, and automatic LED high beams. Yes, standard.

Moving up in trim levels provides access to remote start, a power liftgate, a head-up display, ventilated seats, massaging seats, and a 15-inch touchscreen.

What Is Driving the VW Tiguan Like?

My test model was the 2026 VW Tiguan SEL R-Line Turbo, which comes with an additional 67 hp over the standard 201 horsepower from the 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine. This boost was certainly noticeable merging into traffic and accelerating on the highway, all thanks to a thoughtful engine tweak from the factory. While Sport Mode livens up commutes, I enjoyed relaxing in the Comfort Mode the most. Normal Mode felt a little stiffer.

The VW Tiguan has a smooth ride that absorbs impacts with ease. The SEL R-Line Turbo is a sporty option that won’t make rear seat passengers feel car sick. However, the wind and road noise are a bit disruptive at highway speeds.

Also, this VW SUV feels larger on the inside than it does on the outside. It’s very agile with a convenient turning radius. You can whip in and out of crowded parking lots without breaking a sweat, making it a serious asset on days filled with lots of errands.

Does the 2026 VW Tiguan Have Enough Space?

The 2026 VW Tiguan is a two-row SUV., 5-passenger SUV. It used to have a very small third row, but that option was dropped in 2025. It still offers plenty of space for smaller families, though. Up front, the seats are large and well-padded with ergonomic comfort to keep you focused, relaxed, and energized. There are plenty of adjustment controls to benefit all body types.

In the rear, you can fit three passengers and at least two car seats. I’m 5’1” and felt like a queen in a castle back there. My 50 lb. Beagle, Bruce, had space to stretch out and nap without worry. Best of all, the doors open wide to provide easy access. Lifting him up and onto his seat cover wasn’t an issue. The seat height is a little high for him; he didn’t want to jump down on his own.

Storage space for personal items is pretty good. The center console is a little narrow, but there are plenty of bins and trays to enjoy. Your purse will have to sit in the passenger seat or the rear, though. Overall, you can access 33.8 cubic feet of cargo space behind the rear seats. They fold flat to provide access to up to 69.8 cubes overall. Plus, there is a bonus storage bin under the cargo floor.

The Interior Is Really Where the VW Tiguan’s WOW Factor Hits

The new VW Tiguan has an attractive, luxurious interior that’s extremely inviting. It’s crafted with high-quality materials, including leather upholstery, genuine wood accents, and metallic detailing. Plus, accent stitching and two-tone leather designs draw the eye. The customizable interior ambient lighting is bright and fun to customize. It’s very unique as some of the ambient lighting appears through a design on the glove box.

My coworker, Natalie Merola, explains, “This Sandstone Uni color as a standard color offering blows my mind every time. You know how much I love a pop of color, but this is art in motion with its natural, neutral color palette.”

The layout is convenient, and places everything you need within easy reach so you can keep your eyes on the road. Also, the windows are large, providing tons of visibility. Last but not least, the massive panoramic sunroof ties it all together! It has the perfect amount of tint, allowing you and your passengers to see breathtaking views of nature without being blinded by bright rays of sunshine.

All Tech, No Buttons: This Is Where the VW Tiguan Could Improve

While the VW Tiguan has plenty of standard features and massive, vibrant screens, it lacks physical buttons. You adjust the air conditioning by dragging your finger across a sliding touch bar. On top of that, important functions such as the parking camera and driving modes are buried under menu options. It takes a few taps to finally get to the camera, so you might potentially be blocking traffic before pulling into a space with assistance.

Also, the camera view is a bit pixelated. It doesn’t have the clearest resolution in the world, but it gets the job done. I found the ventilated seats to be a bit weak, but the AC is fast-acting and strong.

Who Should Buy the 2026 VW Tiguan?

The 2026 VW Tiguan is perfect for smaller families who need comfort, space, and a little pampering. This SUV is perfect for those who want to ditch a boring ride for something engaging, modern, and unique.

But it was the massaging seats, normally only available with luxury cars, the tech, attractive design and the many standard features that made me feel special. I might just keep it’s non-luxury price to myself. If I can. That might be its best feature, after all.
