The 2026 Mazda CX-90 PHEV Masters the Art of Saving Fuel Without Compromising Performance

The 2026 Mazda CX-90 PHEV is the largest model in the lineup with three rows, but it's also the most efficient while providing luxury comfort and an athletic performance.

It’s normal to associate larger SUVs with guzzling gas. They’re heavier and thirstier and earned all the jokes about them getting eight miles per gallon. However, the 2026 Mazda CX-90 PHEV shatters that stereotype as the largest model in the lineup while boasting an incredible fuel economy.

As I drove the Mazda CX-90 PHEV around the Carolinas, I kept an eye on the fuel gauge, wondering when I’d have to stop at a gas station. But while I put over 300 miles on the odometer, it didn’t even get low. Even with light off-roading, the CX-90 only sipped fuel here and there, added by its ability to plug it in to recharge the batteries and extend the electric range.

I could go on and on about this Mazda SUV’s efficiency, but there are plenty of other great things to nerd out about as well. It’s comfortable, smart, fun, and spacious. Pricing ranges between about $50,000 – $58,000 and that price includes standard goodies, like all-wheel drive, to serve as a bargain. While it’s not the perfect 3 row SUV, it’s pretty close.

Let’s Talk About how the 2026 Mazda CX-90 PHEV Saves Gas

I took the 2026 Mazda CX-90 PHEV from the flat farm lands in Rock Hill, South Carolina, to the mountain tops in Asheville, North Carolina, to put this SUV through the paces. The 2.5-liter four-cylinder engine is paired with an electric motor and battery for a combined 323 HP and 369 pound-feet of torque—when using premium fuel. The CX-90 functions just fine on regular gas, too, but it delivers a slightly reduced 319 HP. This is a Mazda thing; they recognize that premium fuel produces more power, so they state it that way.

She may be a large barge, but she’s no slouch. There was no shortage of power while climbing steep hills and merging into traffic. As it zoom-zoom-zoom’d (see what I did there?) around traffic, it still earned its EPA estimated 26 mpg when gas-only. Plus, it has 27 miles of electric range on a single charge that, when charged daily, can push that MPG number much higher. Not bad at all for around-town errands.

The CX-90 has an overall range of about 500 miles on a single tank of gas. However, you can see on the driver’s display that the regenerative brakes recharge the battery while slowing down, which adds power back into the battery; I wouldn’t be surprised if 500 miles is the minium, not the max it can go.

Also, while you can toggle between Eco, Sport, and Trail driving modes, the intelligent system efficiently manages the charge for you. For example, at lower speeds while driving through my neighborhood, it only used electric power. The system switches to a mix of gas and electricity at higher speeds.

But Do You Have To Charge the Mazda CX-90?

You can and should plug the 2026 Mazda CX-90. It’s a plug-in hybrid vehicle (PHEV) and intended both to be driven on electric power and to let htat system assist the gas engine. It comes with a charging cable that you can use at home with a normal household-style outlet or at charging stations.

Level One chargers add about a mile or two of range per hour, and Level Two chargers will fully charge the electric range in about 2.5 hours. While most charging stations require a credit card to charge, there are still some free charging stations outside of grocery stores; it’s nice to get some juice while you shop.

But if you can’t charge it, don’t worry too much. The regenerative braking system charges the battery too, which is where the good fuel economy comes from. And Charge Mode uses the gas engine to charge the battery; it’s sort of a wash when it comes to fuel economy but it’s great if you want to drive silently in EV mode or run the car while parked and not use gas.

Comfort Ties the 2026 Mazda CX-90 Together

I’m in and out of Mazda SUVs pretty often as I drive every model once or twice per year. But it was my first time with the PHEV engine, and I found it to be the most efficient and comfortable option in the lineup because, as the upper trim models, it bumps up the driver and passenger pampering with extra space.

The large front seats are well-padded with plenty of adjustment controls, including power lumbar support. Then the second row seats can recline and also have ample padding. This time I had a bench row instead of captain’s chairs in the second row, providing extra space for a third passenger. Then the two seats in the third row are comfortable despite lacking legroom.

Fellow writer, Natalie Merola explains, “With the second row captain’s chairs inside, this does take away one potential seat for a passenger. However, I prefer that there be a center walkthrough with this configuration. Especially since we don’t entertain often, but when we do, our older parents can opt to access the third row more easily than folding down a second-row bench. “

There are air vents in each row to deliver ample heat and cooling power as needed, and it has a smooth, velvety ride over the pavement. The CX-90 has a quiet interior at highway speeds for peaceful jaunts, but in Sport Mode, you may notice an occasional deep, throaty engine roar that’s more satisfying instead of annoying.

Does Going Bigger Mean the CX-90 Has Enough Space?

Sure, the 2026 Mazda CX-90 is larger than the Mazda CX-50, but some larger families may need a bit more room. The third row is best suited for kids under 5’1,” but at least the first two rows can fit taller adults.

There is about 15.9 cubic feet of cargo space behind the third row, which is adequate for groceries and suitcases. With those seats folded down, you get 40.1 cubic feet of cargo space with up to 75.2 overall.

Options like the Kia Telluride offer more space, but only the Toyota Grand Highlander comes close to matching its fuel economy. Also, there are a few smaller trays and cubbies up front for personal items, but the glove box is quite shallow. The CX-90 can tow up to 5,000 lbs and has roof rails if you need to pull or place extra cargo on top.

Tech In the 2026 Mazda CX-90 PHEV Is the Subject of Critical Controversy

I’m aware that, as a nation, we are addicted to our touch screens. The 12.3-inch multimedia screen only functions as a touch screen when paired with Apple CarPlay/Android Auto. The native system is controlled by a rotary dial system.

For that reason, many critics call the Mazda CX-90 outdated, but I disagree. The dial is easy to master, and you can change your podcast or radio station while keeping your eyes on the road. Or you can use voice commands as well. Plus, the premium Bose audio system helped modernize things.

The screen’s graphics are crisp, and the available 360-degree camera system provides tons of visibility. Also, the head-up display shows you the basics, such as the speed limit or navigation directions, without being flashy or distracting.

There are tons of small touches to show you how smart this car is. For example, it dinged me for only driving with one hand on the wheel and for looking at the multimedia screen for too long while in motion. It’s designed for people who just like to focus on driving with the purpose of not being too flashy or in your face, and it’s honestly refreshing.

What Do You Mean the Mazda CX-90 Isn’t A Luxury SUV?

Technically, the 2026 Mazda CX-90 PHEV isn’t a luxury car, but you wouldn’t guess that based on the interior or its performance. The sticker price is the only thing that outs it as an affordable option.

The upscale and elegant interior is plush with soft-touch covered surfaces, available Nappa leather upholstery, fabric and wood accents, and sleek metal painted features tie it all together. Plus, the massive panoramic sunroof and large windows allow natural light to fill the space.

It has bold color schemes involving black, white, and brown with accent stitching to draw the eye. But while it will spoil you with relaxing pampering, the materials feel tough and durable. The interior will stand up to nicks and scuffs.

Versatile Families and Drivers That Want More Space Love the Mazda CX-90

The 2026 Mazda CX-90 PHEV stands out as a family option because with the third row seats folded down, there’s a solid amount of cargo space for everyone’s stuff. Plus, you can put the seats up if extra passengers need to go in the very back at a moment’s notice.

It’s the best Mazda SUV for taller drivers and for those with light towing and hauling needs, with the ability to save fuel without sacrificing its power or performance for an exciting driver experience. But it’s also quite comfortable, relaxing, and convenient unless you need a larger third row.

And there’s a lot:

  • Enjoy fewer stops at the gas station with 27 miles of electric power
  • Things like standard AWD and leatherette upholstery make this SUV a great deal
  • Wide door openings and a convenient lift-over height make installing car seats and loading cargo easy
  • Features like power lumbar support and ventilated seats are the lap of luxury, adding to its comfort

Here’s What You Need to Know

Of course, every car has its caveats:

  • The CX-90 uses regular fuel (87 octane) but if you use premium you’ll get the full 323 HP; regular unleaded gas produces 319 HP
  • The PHEV is the top tier so it’s pricier and filled with premium features
  • There is no touch screen functionality without connecting to Wireless Apple CarPlay or Android Auto
  • The third row is on the smaller side and better for shorter passengers
  • Storage space for personal items is a little lacking

A PHEV is the best of both worlds these days—when the price of gas steals your joy, just plug your car in. But you can still take that long car trip and not have to worry about running out of battery charge. And then, you can counter all those jokes about SUVs getting terrible fuel economy with a smug smile since that punchline clearly doesn’t apply to you.
