If car shopping makes you feel indecisive, you aren’t alone—especially when it comes to hybrids. With today’s gas prices, affordable hybrid SUVs are particularly attractive. That’s why we’re comparing the 2026 Subaru Forester Hybrid and 2026 Mazda CX-50 Hybrid. Both of these compact SUVs are convenient options for city living and weekend adventures, without asking too much financially.

The 2026 Subaru Forester Hybrid is attractive while rocking a fresh glow-up. Then the 2026 Mazda CX-50 Hybrid confidently sips fuel with alluring style. Deciding between Subaru and Mazda might not be exactly easy for growing families or adventurers looking for something capable without being gigantic. These AWD SUVs are versatile options known for their safety, capability, and comfort.

Both are relatively attainable, too, with the Mazda CX-50 Hybrid’s price range being $34,750 to $41,330, and the Subaru Forester Hybrid’s range being $34,995 to $44,715. So, since they’re similar in offerings and price, it’s difficult to choose which ride to save gas with. I’ll make it a bit easier, having driven both.

This story is 100% human-researched and written based on actual first-person knowledge, extensive experience, and expertise on the subject of cars and trucks.

Is the 2026 Mazda CX-50 Hybrid a Good SUV for Families? I’d Say Yes

Yes, I’m coming off a week in the 2026 Mazda CX-50 Hybrid, and it makes a difference. It’s the first Mazda specifically designed for the American market, meaning it has more cargo and passenger space than the outgoing CX-5. At 5’1”, I felt cozy in the backseat, but taller folks might feel cramped. The rear doors open wide, providing easy access for installing child seats and tons of gear—but pay attention to the head and shoulder room. It has a lower roofline than the Forester.

Behind the rear seats is 31.4 cubic feet of space to use, and it expands to 56.3 cubic feet overall when they’re folded. Plus, there is a storage bin under the cargo floor, and the CX-50 Hybrid can tow up to 1,500 lbs.

Fellow car reviewer and EV expert, Liv Leigh shares, “The CX-50 is weirdly spacious. Like, it’s definitely a compact vehicle, but there’s some sort of alternate perception happening because I honestly don’t know how they make it feel so roomy. “

Also, the CX-50 Hybrid gets an EPA-estimated 39 mpg in the city and up to 37 mpg on the highway with Toyota’s hybridized 2.5-liter four-cylinder engine. It can travel about 500 miles on a single tank of gas with plenty of power, thanks to having 219 hp. I averaged 35.3 miles after a week with 120-mile road trips between Rock Hill, SC, and Asheville, NC, with errands and light off-roading in between. I could’ve done better, but I kept sticking to Sport Mode with my lead foot.

The Mazda Has a Smooth Ride, and [Sort of] Smooth Tech

It has a pretty quiet interior and a smooth ride. The climate control system is fast and effective for relieving heat on hot afternoons and warming your bones on frigid mornings. The biggest drawback might be related to the tech. There’s no touchscreen unless you enable wireless Apple CarPlay. Also, the infotainment screen is a little small and sits far back on the dashboard.

The camera view could be improved. But the simplicity of the tech is perfect for those who just want to relax and drive. Lack of a touchscreen aside, my family and I can rest assured thanks to the standard safety features Mazda packs into the CX-50 hybrid.

Is the 2026 Subaru Forester Hybrid Good for Families? Absolutely

Yes, the 2026 Subaru Forester Hybrid stands out as a great option for families. After spending a week behind the wheel, it stands out for a few different reasons. I tackled similar conditions around mountain towns and country roads with this SUV, making it a comfortable, versatile option for families. When it comes to cargo space, I thought it had a solid amount of cargo and passenger space. You can access 29.6 cubic feet of cargo space behind the rear seat and up to 74.4 total—quite a bit more than the Mazda.

Plus, it saves at the pump. The 2026 Forester Hybrid gets an EPA-estimated 35 mpg in the city and up to 34 mpg on the highway. With the 2.5-liter four-cylinder engine, you get 194 hp, and, according to Subaru, a 10% boost in acceleration because of the hybrid battery’s instant torque.

It can travel about 581 miles on a single tank of gas, even with a mechanical all-wheel-drive system, unlike Mazda’s electronic all-wheel-drive system. But I’ve tested both systems in the snow and felt confident and in control 100% of the time. This estimate is spot on after using this car for hiking, off-roading, and multiple errands. However, I did Sport Mode AGAIN. I have a bit of an addiction… But the power to pass others is there when you need it.

Interior comfort is where the Subaru Forester Hybrid truly shines. The front seats are well-padded and supportive for hours of relaxed driving. The rear seats are pretty spacious for taller folks as well. Plus, the doors open wide for convenient access. It has a silky smooth ride over the pavement, and wind and road noise are kept at bay.

You may find that it’s a bit short on power. Adventure Mom, Kristen Brown, explains, “The recently redesigned Subaru Forester is a roomy, comfortable, and capable mid-sized SUV that’s great for parents and campers alike. It’s one of those cars that’s pretty decent at everything. Except for moving quickly.”

Also, the tech impresses with a massive 11.6-inch tablet-style display. The review camera quality could be improved, but it gets the job done. Some folks complain that their phone slides out of the wireless charging pad, but I didn’t have this issue.

2026 Subaru Forester Hybrid vs. 2026 Mazda CX-50 Hybrid: Both are Great, But for Different Things

2026 Mazda CX-50 Hybrid | Allison Barfield

So, does the 2026 Subaru Forester Hybrid or the 2026 Mazda CX-50 Hybrid have more value? They are similar in price, but the CX-50 Hybrid has a higher fuel economy rating thanks to Toyota’s all-wheel drive hybrid system. While they can tow the same amount (1,500 lbs), the Subaru Forester Hybrid has more space for people and their things. Plus, it has more storage cubbies and trays for organizing personal items and snacks.

Overall, the Forester Hybrid is the more comfortable SUV for everyone to ride in. Plus, the extra range means even fewer stops at the gas station. However, the CX-50 Hybrid doesn’t fall far behind. It’s a more athletic and enjoyable car to drive. The Forester Hybrid feels a bit more modern in terms of tech, but both SUVs have stylish interiors. Also, both have above-average off-roading capabilities and intelligent all-wheel drive systems for snow and inclement weather situations.

When you compare entry-level models, the Mazda CX-50 Hybrid has more perks, such as remote keyless entry, keyless start, synthetic leather upholstery, and dual-zone automatic climate control. Unless you need a little more space, a sturdier all-wheel drive system and absolutely need a touch screen at all times, the CX-50 Hybrid is a more well-rounded bargain.
