2026 Audi A6 TFSI First Drive: When a Trophy Sedan Is What You Need (And Deserve)
More features, more luxuries and simply, more for the money in the 2026 Audi A6

Don’t we all dream of a trophy car? For some of us it might be a cute, sporty and luxe SUV, but for others, it’s a sedan. Not a convertible roadster (rainy, snowy weather = ugh) or a speedy performance car (must I answer every gear head question about my car?). But a plush, comfy, fun-to-drive sedan that leaves nothing out? That’s the magic of the 2026 Audi A6.
Priced from about $64K to about $72K, Audi redesigned the 9th generation of this sedan—it was first introduced in 1968!—to include more standard premium features, to simplify the lineup and to deliver more for the money. It’s also the Goldilocks of Audi’s sedan lineup; larger than the diminutive A3 and more spacious than the A5, yet smaller than the full-size A8.

Quiet Luxury Is Included In This Redesign

Sedans are, by definition, quiet luxury—to use a passé but accurate term. The simple addition of a second set of doors takes any car from “all about me” to a social pod that invites others to enjoy the ride. The lower stance puts it squarely in the realm of elegance and being closer to the ground naturally makes it more fun to drive.
For the 2026 A6 redesign, Audi added more premium features like sport seats, a larger 14.5” multimedia screen and an electrochromic fixed sunroof that turns opaque with the push of a button; it can also be set to a pattern if you only want to block some of the sun. The A6 is, as a luxury sedan, outfitted with premium finishes and leather seats in 3 color options, a digital driver’s display and Audi’s sharp LED headlights.
It has a flat-top and bottom steering wheel for a very modern feel, and buyers who postpone their purchase will get an even more modern steering wheel in the second half of the year; the current one has touch-sensitive buttons; the new one will have roller bars for selecting media and functions. Best of all, all wheel drive, which Audi calls quattro, is standard. As it should be, if you ask me.

Audi’s Light Show Is the Best; The 2026 Audi A6 Does It Well

One of the most defining details in any of Audi’s new cars or SUVs are the lights: headlights, tail lights, puddle lights, ambient lighting. The A6 is no exception, though buyers who want the whole show will have to go all in on the Prestige model; the Premium model has LED headlights, Premium Plus adds matrix lights but it’s the Prestige that allows all the customization.
On the front, slender new headlights frame a wider honeycomb grille and the interlocking ring badge that now sits higher and more prominent on the grille. The lights are comprised of 48 LEDs and in Prestige models you can choose one of several designs for your headlights which animate as you walk up with the key.
The Audi A6 also features new tail lights. Narrow horizontal teardrops span either side of the rear just above an expansive but slim light bar. The actual tail lights are small vertical boxes on either side of the rear end. The top lights deliver a satisfying sequential turn signal pattern that sweeps across the corner of the car when the driver taps the turn signal.
The customizable tail lights aren’t just a clever creative feature, they also deliver a subtle message at just the right time: When the emergency flashers are activated the lights will display the emergency triangle, reinforcing the message to approaching drivers.
There are puddle lights that illuminate in the dark, and inside, ambient lighting that accents key functions as well as door panels, the dashboard and more.

Design and Feature Package Options Add to the Luxury

The Audi A6 is available in three trims: Premium, Premium Plus and Prestige. The top two trims offer packages that increase the level of luxury. Premium Plus buyers can add a blackout package for a sportier look, and Prestige buyers can go all out with sport or design packages.
The Sport Plus package ($5,850) adds things like sport-tuning, four wheel steering and true sport seats; the design package adds custom Nappa leather massage seats. Both add head up display and a premium Bang & Olufsen sound system with speakers in the front head rests. This last one is pretty cool; to have the navigation voice murmuring turn by turn directions in your ear as you drive is a sublime luxury.

Behind the Wheel of the Audi A6 TFSI

Audi sought to improve every detail in the 2026 A6 and the drive experience is no exception. For 2026, the A6 delivers more power, at 362 HP, and more torque at 406 pound-feet, versus the last model. Paired with Audi’s TFSI, or turbo fuel stratified injection which basically means it’s turbo charged, the drive experience is quite satisfying.
The laid-back luxury of the Audi A6 entices you to take it easy; lean back in the seat and enjoy time in this car. But when you need to merge onto the highway, power underfoot is necessary and the A6 delivers. With a 6-cylinder engine and a 7-speed transmission we felt pretty instant acceleration.
The S-Line model is powered by the same engine as the other models though it includes more sport-tuned features; for 2026 this replaces the S6 found in prior model years, and while it carries less power, it is a reminder that performance isn’t all about horsepower; the sport seats, the rear wheel steering and stiffer suspension added to the feel of a sports sedan. All that was missing was engine feedback in the cabin and the sound of rematching on the downshift.
Space For People and Things

The Audi A6 is a ‘just right’ sedan: Spending time in the rear seat I found it to be comfortable but not overly large—a nice detail for the driver. I had plenty of room to cross my legs, and appreciated the window shades and center arm rest. I also really liked having the sunroof over head.
The trunk is amply sized for luggage and larger items and is powered so it closes with the touch of a button, another nice detail.

Audi included a lot of great features even in the entry-level Premium model:

- The rear seat roomy but not overly large rear seat
- 3 years of maintenance included
- The new more powerful V6 turbo engine is unified across the lineup
What You Need to Know

Of course, there are caveats:
- Many of the better features are included in a package
- Customizable matrix lighting is only available in the top-end model
- S-Line is a package available only on the Prestige model
- Head up display and massage seats are Prestige-only features
- There is no longer an S model offered

While Audi increased the base price by $3,500, more standard features are included, too; and, even with everything, the price tops out at about $80K. Here’s how it breaks down:

- Prestige, priced from $71,400, adds a passenger-side screen, customizable digital headlights, Nappa leather interior, power door closers, front headrest speakers, adaptive air suspension, additional paint options, 5 interior leather options, a 21” wheel option, and package options:
- S Line black design package $2,450
- Sport plus package with 21” wheels, all wheel steering, carbon fiber trim details, flat bottom steering wheel, summer tires, sport seats and lack of Sport badge for a truly under the radar look, $5,850

There certainly are many options for a trophy car. Flashy options, adventure options, track-worthy options. But sometimes a trophy should be just for you, not for all the neighbors to see, which is what we love about quiet luxury: We know it’s there even if everyone else doesn’t. And that’s the magic of the Audi A6; it’s luxe, it’s sporty, it’s fun to drive. Only the tail lights, if you’re looking, will give it away—unless you decide to leave them in demure mode, too.
